- Synopsis
- On this page there are two labelled, cutaway cross section views showing the process of chromatography. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The first diagram, in the top right of the page, shows a beaker with a small amount of water in the bottom. A piece of chromatography paper with a horizontal line of drops of dye has been suspended in the water so that the drops are just above the surface of the water. The drops are labelled X, Y, A, B, C, going from left to right. In the second diagram, in the bottom right of the page, the water has soaked into the paper and carried the drops of dye up the page with it. Drops X (green) and Y (mauve) are each mixtures of two dyes and have separated out into their constituents, with the dyes that have smaller molecules going further up the page.
