- Synopsis
- The image shows the cross section of the epidermis. The outer layer is at the top of the diagram, the basal layer at the bottom of the page. There is a key on page one of the tactile version of this diagram. A locator dot and title are shown. These must always be at the top left of the page when the image is the right way up. There are five distinct layers. These are labelled on the left of the diagram, and reading from the top downwards are: * horny layer (stratum corneum) * clear layer (stratum lucidum) * granular layer (stratum granulosum) * prickle cell layer (stratum spinosum) * basal layer (stratum germinative) On the right of the diagram are the two zones (the keratinisation zone and the germinative zone) indicated by curly brackets.
