- Synopsis
- This close-up image is taken from where the river divides for the second time roughly in the centre of the Abingdon Monks' map. The image is sketchy and made up of grey lines. It shows what looks like the side profile of a heron with an eel in its beak standing facing to the left. The body of the bird is drawn in the pale blue river with its long legs on the green land. Herons often stand very still on the edge of a river or in the shallows watching the water intently for fish that they can grab swiftly in their long beaks. The long beak, eye, wing and long legs with exaggerated long clawed feet are clearly shown along with an idea of the tail and chest feathers. The eel is shown as a thin wiggly line from the beak to the base of the bird's chest. The first page of the image is a description of the image in braille text. The second page is of a tactile image bordered by a thick line and is four times larger than the actual images on the map. In order to get a better idea of what the heron is like, it has been in-filled with a texture with lines from the actual image shown as well. Solid texture shows the heron's eye, legs and eel. A thick broken line shows the line dividing the river from land.
