Freshwater Fish - Catfish and Carp (UEB contracted)

Synopsis

This image shows two fish seen from the side with their heads on the left of the page and their tails on the right of the page. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The fish at the top of the page is a catfish. Coming from the area around the mouth on the left of the page are three pairs of barbels. These whiskers detect food in the muddy water at the bottom of lakes. To the right one of its two eyes is shown. To the right of the head is the crescent-shaped gill cover. It curves down to the right then down and to the left. Down from the gill cover is one of the two pectoral fins. In the bottom centre of the fish is one of the two pelvic fins. In the bottom right of the fish is the larger, single, central anal fin. On the right of the image is the tail or caudal fin, which has a central cleft. To the left of the tail on the top of the fish is the adipose fin. This fin has no spines and is not present in some fish. To the left at the top of the fish is the single, central dorsal fin, which sticks up vertically. From the head to the tail running down the centre of the fish is the lateral line. This is an organ that detects vibrations and changes in water pressure. It is not visible in all fish. The catfish is a pale grey colour with darker coloured fins and tail. The fish at the bottom of the page is a carp. In the centre of its head one of its two eyes is shown. Where the head joins the scaly body, there is crescent-shaped gill cover. It curves down to the right then down and to the left. Down from the gill cover is one of the two pectoral fins. In the bottom centre of the fish is one of the two pelvic fins, they attach close to each other nearly on the midline. In the bottom right of the fish is the single, central anal fin. On the right of the image is the tail or caudal fin, which has a central cleft. At the top centre of the fish is the large single, central dorsal fin. The carp is a pale silver colour with hints of gold. The fins are darker and the tail has hints of orange colour.
