- Synopsis
- This image shows two images of The Great Wall of China, one at the top and one at the bottom of the page. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The image at the top of the page is a view of the side of one of the numerous small forts on the wall. The top of the fort is in the top centre of the page. It has a flat roof protected by a castellated wall. Down from this are three windows. The base of the fort is built on sloping ground so its wall to the left is much higher than the wall to the right. The wall itself slopes down to the left and up to the right. Soldiers and people would walk along a path on the top of the main wall, protected by a smaller castellated wall on each side. At the bottom of the page is a view of the Great Wall from a distance. There is a small wall fort (like the enlarged image above) on the left of the page. The wall goes right, moving up and down as it follows the hilly landscape. In places it is very steep. There is a second small wall fort higher up to the right. Down from this fort there are some steep rocky crags where the rock rises out from the dense trees and jungle. The wall is between 4.5and 9 metres wide (15 to 30 feet) and up to 7.5 metres (27 feet) high. The length of the wall is estimated to be 50,000 kilometres (31,250 miles) long. The first section of the wall was started in 220 BC and the last section was built during the Ming Dynasty and completed in 1644. This section was about 6,000 km (3,750 miles) long. There are various different sections of the wall which are not connected. Some of these sections run in parallel, many miles apart. The wall is made up of stone and compacted earth, running over desert, plains and mountainous regions.
