- Synopsis
- This page shows a labelled diagram of a longitudinal wave being produced on a Slinky: a long, loose spring developed as a child's toy. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. The diagram is surrounded by a dashed line image border. The image shows a longitudinal wave being produced on a Slinky by the forwards and backwards motion of a hand. The hand is in the centre left of the page. It is holding the end of the Slinky and moving the end of the Slinky backwards and forwards. The direction of movement is indicated by two horizontal arrows up the page from the hand. To the right of the hand the Slinky stretches across the page to the right. The waves travel along the Slinky, moving to the right. Their direction of travel is indicated by a right-pointing arrow above the spring. The right end of the Slinky cannot be seen as it is beyond the image border in the centre right of the page. The waves can be seen as areas along the length of the spring where the coils are further apart from each other and where they are closer together (compressed).
