- Esteban Echeverría fue el más importante poeta del primer período romántico en el Río de la Plata, introductor de este movimiento, fue quien utilizó la temática del indio y del desierto en la manifestación poética, y es considerado el autor del primer cuento argentino "El matadero", aunque críticos posteriores señalan que este escrito tiene dos temáticas o nudos paralelos que no condicen con el decálogo del cuento, por ejemplo, planteado por Horacio Quiroga, de que un cuento debe tener una única unidad temática. El matadero fue escrito entre los años 1838 y 1840, pero permaneció inédito hasta que en 1871. Para muchos críticos este pequeño texto representa el primer cuento breve de la literatura argentina. Se discute si es un cuadro de costumbres, si es realista debido a la crítica social de la cual se hace eco el narrador omnisciente, o si introdujo el estilo de la narrativa de Larra, ya que si bien la generación del 37 estaba en contra de lo españolizante, no se oponían a la nueva narrativa que había surgido después de la revolución de la independencia.
