- A pesar de haber sido editada por primera vez alrededor de dos siglos atrás, el tema de Madame Bovary puede considerarse actual, y ante todo, absolutamente atrapante. El género, plenamente realista, se complementa con las objetivas descripciones de la pequeña burguesía francesa, los ínfimos detalles de la vida cotidiana, y la prodigiosa penetración psicológica de los personajes. La acción de la novela transcurre lentamente, a pesar de lo cual logra mantener en todo momento acaparada la atención del lector. Contando con una extensión muy adecuada y un lenguaje claro y de absoluta maestría literaria, resulta agradable y de fácil comprensión, aun para un lector reticente. El argumento, basado en el adulterio de la esposa de un jóven médico de provincias, describe la sórdida corrupción del alma de una mujer, quien busca en la realidad un amor que colme sus frívolos deseos, nacidos de la lectura de diversas novelas románticas de la época. La maravillosa descripción de la psicología de los personajes es otro de los poderosos elementos que conforman este libro: Emma Bovary, entregada a una existencia vacía, necia y profundamente egoísta, contrasta violentamente con su esposo Charles, poseedor de un carácter aburrido y sin relieves, aunque profundamente noble y humilde. Así, con numerosos elementos a favor, Madame Bovary puede considerarse como un joya de la literatura francesa, como una poética imagen de un estilo y un tiempo.
