Aunque Güiraldes descolló en la novela, siempre fue un poeta en la prosa, pues combino, con singular don estiticista, la narración con el lirismo. El mismo año de la publicación de su primer poemario salió a la luz Cuentos de muerte y de sangre, preludios que resuenan la estética de sus obras mayores: el vaciado de una realidad propia que se ama profundamente -la tierra nativa y sus temas tradicionales- en moldes europeos de la literatura de post-guerra. Su narrativa es prosa poematica que deja oir los ecos de Baudelaire, y Flaubert.
