- Die Länder Zentralasiens - Kasachstan, Usbekistan, Kirgistan, Tadschikistan und Turkmenistan - weisen kulturelle und historische Gemeinsamkeiten auf und sehen sich mit ähnlichen inneren wie äußeren Herausforderungen konfrontiert. Ungeachtet auch divergierender Transformationspfade und intraregionaler Spannungen hat sich in den Ländern seit ihrer staatlichen Unabhängigkeit 1991 eine spezifische raumbezogene Identität herausgebildet. In dem Band werden historische, vor allem aber aktuelle Entwicklungen in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft der fünf Länder sowie die Rollen externer Akteure erörtert. Darüber hinaus stehen Themen wie Menschenrechte, Medien und Zivilgesellschaft im Mittelpunkt. Schließlich gehen die Autoren in unterschiedlichen Sachbereichen der Frage nach den Chancen und Grenzen institutionalisierter regionaler Kooperation nach.
