- Die Präsenz arabischer Menschen in Deutschland ist kein neues Phänomen. Personen wie Sayyida Salme (Emily Ruete) oder Hassan Taufik waren schon vor 1900 Teil der deutschen Gesellschaft. Orientalistische, nationalistische und koloniale Projektionen umfangen ihre Biografien. Aischa Ahmed stellt diskursiv marginalisierte Lebensgeschichten ins Zentrum ihrer Untersuchung und gibt Einblick in den Alltag arabischen Lebens in Deutschland zwischen 1871 und 1933. Es gelingt ihr, aus sensiblem historischen Quellenmaterial ein Narrativ arabisch-deutscher Geschichte zu erstellen, das eigensinnige Akteur*innen zeigt und belegt: Die Vorstellung einer homogenen deutschen Nation war bereits um 1900 hinfällig.
