- In zahlreichen westlichen Demokratien erodieren langfristige Parteibindungen. Diesem Prozess werden gravierende Folgen für das politische Geschehen zugeschrieben. Der vorliegende Band geht der Frage nach, inwieweit ein solches Dealignment die Wechselwahl verändert: Wechseln infolge dieses Prozesses zwangsläufig mehr Wähler die Partei? Werden die Wechselwähler politisch zusehends kompetenter? Die international vergleichende Analyse am Beispiel der USA, Großbritanniens und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zeigt, dass die politische Kompetenz der Wechselwähler - verglichen mit jener der Stammwähler - unverändert bleibt. Die Wechselrate steigt in den beiden europäischen Demokratien etwas an, nicht jedoch in den USA. Ein Dealignment verändert somit nicht zwangsläufig, sondern nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen das Wechselwahlverhalten. Die verbreiteten Vermutungen über zwangsläufige Folgen eines Dealignments scheitern, da sie von zu einfachen Annahmen über das individuelle Wahlverhalten ausgehen.
