- Für die Beschreibung des Verhältnisses von Politik und Religion und des Weges der westlichen Gesellschaften in die Moderne bleibt der Begriff der Säkularisierung unverzichtbar. Einer einseitigen Säkularisierungsthese kann aber sowohl empirisch als auch theoretisch widersprochen werden. Die Autoren dieses Bandes beleuchten deshalb aus ideen- und begriffsgeschichtlicher Perspektive die ambivalente Beziehung von Politik und Religion. Es zeigt sich, daß die Geschichte der westlichen Moderne nicht als linear-fortschreitender Prozess der Säkularisierung beschrieben werden kann: Säkularisierung wird von vielfältigen und auch widersprüchlichen Tendenzen der Resakralisierung begleitet.
