- Dieses Buch in Viewegs "Einsteiger-Serie" zur Mathematik eignet sich als Begleitlektüre zu einer einführenden Vorlesung und zur selbstständigen Lektüre. Es wendet sich an Studierende, aber auch an Lehrer(innen) und Schüler(innen) sowie an mathematisch interessierte "Quereinsteiger". Diskrete Mathematik ist ein relativ junges Gebiet der Mathematik, das in einzigartiger Weise sogenannte "reine Mathematik" mit "Anwendungen" verbindet. Insbesondere seit der Einführung des Computers in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts drängten sich Probleme der diskreten Mathematik in den Vordergrund. Im Gegensatz zu solchen Teilgebieten der Mathematik, die sich mit kontinuierlichen, "stetigen" Phänomenen beschäftigen, wie z.B. die Analysis, ist es eine Herausforderung der diskreten Mathematik, Modelle zum Verständnis und zur Beherrschung von endlichen, eventuell allerdings sehr großen Phänomenen und Strukturen zu entwickeln. Eine Hauptaufgabe liegt in der Berechnung von Objekten; es werden Formeln und Algorithmen behandelt. Insofern sind die Übergänge zur Informatik fließend. Diese Einführung ist leicht verständlich und im gleichen Stil wie die anderen Lehrbücher von Albrecht Beutelspacher geschrieben.
