Synopsis

Foreign architectural and engineering commissions have seldom been more attractive. More and more planners are benefiting from incre- ing internationalization by gaining experience in other building c- tures and thus broadening their horizons. Here the European Union offers opportunities and freedoms that would have been inconce- able 10 to 15 years ago. The single European market is opening up increasingly as national protectionism is demolished and more states join the Union. It was not least growing architectural interest in our European neighbours that made the launch of our new series of books so successful with "Building in Germany", "Building in Switzerland" and "Building in Austria". The present book is intended to build a bridge to new international expansion for the series. It focuses on the fundamentals, basic conditions and realization opportunities for cross border activity within the European Union, rather than inf- mation on professional activities in a particular country. We would like to thank Herr Carsten Prote, who worked as co - thor on Chapters B 3. 2 to B 3. 5, B 4. 3 and B 5. 3. Thanks are also due to Natascha Meister, Frank Bojkovsky and Alexander Malik for gathering basic information in their diploma theses. One major problem for such a wide ranging set of themes is ens- ing that the information provided is up to date.
