- Synopsis
- The reasons for rules, the reasons for sanctions, the reasons for public enforcement, and, more generally, the reasons for a protective state all these questions have traditionally constituted the core of genuine ly legal discourse and thinking. In this book, I seek to approach this set of questions from an economic perspective and I do hope that many of my colleagues at continentallaw schools will agree that this probably for many of the readers - novel approach sheds some new light on old problems. This book is inspired by two fruitful periods of research at the Center for Public Choice, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. I like to remember these times not only for the challenging intellectu al climate, but also for a very personal and friendly atmosphere. I am particularly grateful to Prof. Viktor and Monika Vanberg for their hospitality. My work has benefitted from various comments and critical sug gestions that I received at the Center. I would like to express my gratitude to both Prof. Vanberg and Prof. James Buchanan, nobel laureate in economics, for their continued encouragement and stim ulating discussions. I am also indebted for all the other assistance that I was gran ted at GcorgT Mason University, by professors and visitors, who have in various way~ contributed to the completion of the manuscript; not to forget the "good soul" at the Center, Betty Tillman.
