Drawing on John Dewey and the later Ludwig Wittgenstein, this book employs philosophy as a conceptual resource to develop new methodological and analytical tools for conducting in situ empirical investigations. Chapter one explores the philosophies of Wittgenstein and Dewey. Chapter two exposits Deweyan ideas of embodiment, the primacy of the aesthetic encounter, and aesthetically expressive meaning underdeveloped in Wittgenstein. Chapter three introduces the method of practical epistemological analysis (PEA) and a model of situated epistemic relations (SER) to investigate the learning of body techniques in dinghy sailing. The concluding chapter introduces a model of situated artistic relations (SAR) to investigate the learning of artistic techniques of self-expression in the Swedish sloyd classroom.

The City in American Cinema: Film and Postindustrial Culture (International Library of the Moving Image)

by Johan Andersson Lawrence Webb

How has American cinema engaged with the rapid transformation of American cities and urban culture since the 1960s? And what role have films and film industries played in shaping and mediating cultural and economic change in the 'postindustrial' city? This interdisciplinary collection argues that cinema and cities have become increasingly intertwined in the era of urban branding, cultural industries, and 'creative cities'. Spanning four decades of US urban history, from decline and crisis in the 1970s and 1980s to neoliberal restructuring, galloping globalization and accelerated gentrification in the 1990s and beyond, the book considers the complex, evolving relationship between moving image cultures and the urban environment in key cinematic cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit. Across twelve chapters, the contributors address these questions via textual and industrial perspectives, analyzing questions of narrative, aesthetics, and genre as well as contexts of production, exhibition and reception. Drawing together critical concepts from film and urban studies, the chapters view contemporary cinema through the political and social geographies of class, race, gender, and sexuality. From Hollywood blockbusters to independent cinema, romantic comedy to science fiction, key films discussed include Frances Ha, Fruitvale Station, Desperately Seeking Susan, The King of New York, Inception, Doctor Strange, Only Lovers Left Alive and The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

Beckett's Creatures: Art of Failure after the Holocaust

by Joseph Anderton

In the shadow of the Holocaust, Samuel Beckett captures humanity in ruins through his debased beings and a decomposing mode of writing that strives to 'fail better'. But what might it mean to be a 'creature' or 'creaturely' in Beckett's world? In the first full-length study of the concept of the creature in Beckett's prose and drama, this book traces the suspended lives and melancholic existences of Beckett's ignorant and impotent creatures to assess the extent to which political value marks the divide between human and inhuman. Through close readings of Beckett's prose and drama, particularly texts from the middle period, including Molloy, Malone Dies, The Unnamable, Waiting for Godot and Endgame, Anderton explicates four arenas of creaturely life in Beckett. Each chapter attends to a particular theme – testimony, power, humour and survival – to analyse a range of pressures and impositions that precipitate the creaturely state of suspension. Drawing on the writings of Adorno, Agamben, Benjamin, Deleuze and Derrida to explore the overlaps between artistic and political structures of creation, the creature emerges as an in-between figure that bespeaks the provisional nature of the human. The result is a provocative examination of the indirect relationship between art and history through Beckett's treatment of testimony, power, humour and survival, which each attest to the destabilisation of meaning after Auschwitz.

LEED Lab: A Model for Sustainable Design Education

by Patricia Andrasik

Facility performance evaluations inform the long-term life of a building and do not end with design or construction. To this aim, Patricia Andrasik created LEED Lab, in collaboration with the US Green Building Council, an increasingly popular international interdisciplinary collegiate laboratory course, which utilizes campus buildings as demonstration sites to facilitate the green assessment of existing buildings. LEED Lab: A Model for Sustainable Design Education uses the LEED O+M building rating system to measure and achieve performance-driven campus facilities in which the readers work and operate. The book explains in simple terms the theory, tasks, tools and techniques necessary for credit implementation and achievement, and includes case studies and exercises for practical application in each chapter. Readers will learn the conceptual scientific framework used to understand existing operational performance and how to quantify sustainable synergies, create green campus policies with administrators, and understand systems such as energy and water in a research-based application. The entire manual is accompanied by a vast online ‘Teaching Toolkit’ to provide helpful educational resources such as syllabi, lectures, examinations, assignments, Individual Student Progress Presentation (ISSP) templates, web resources, and much more. An excellent guide for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in LEED Lab or a similar campus building assessment course, as well as construction or architectural professionals and facility managers, this manual navigates the complexities of using a green building diagnostic tool such as LEED O+M towards greater environmental literacy.

Fashion, Performance, and Performativity: The Complex Spaces of Fashion (Dress Cultures)

by Andrea Kollnitz and Marco Pecorari

In the first comprehensive study of the interactions between fashion, performance and performativity, a group of international experts explore fashion as the ideal 'complex space' – or, in other words, the ideal space where performance and performativity come together, according to the works of seminal theorists Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Andrew Parker.Bringing together western and non-western, historical and contemporary case studies and theories, the book explores the magazines, photography, exhibitions, global colonial divides, digital media, and more, which have become key markers of the fashion industry as we know it today.Using existing literature as a springboard and incorporating perspectives from fashion studies, art history, media studies and gender studies, as well as from artists and practitioners, Fashion, Performance, and Performativity is an innovative and essential work for students, scholars and practitioners across multiple disciplines.
