Project Management for Research: A Guide for Graduate Students (Systems Innovation Book Series)

by Adedeji B. Badiru Christina F. Rusnock Vhance V. Valencia

Graduate research is a complicated process, which many undergraduate students aspire to undertake. The complexity of the process can lead to failures for even the most brilliant students. Success at the graduate research level requires not only a high level of intellectual ability but also a high level of project management skills. Unfortunately, many graduate students have trouble planning and implementing their research. Project Management for Research: A Guide for Graduate Students reflects the needs of today’s graduate students. All graduate students need mentoring and management guidance that has little to do with their actual classroom performance. Graduate students do a better job with their research programs if a self-paced guide is available to them. This book provides such a guide. It covers topics ranging from how to select an appropriate research problem to how to schedule and execute research tasks. The authors take a project management approach to planning and implementing graduate research in any discipline. They use a conversational tone to address the individual graduate student. This book helps graduate students and advisors answer most of the basic questions of conducting and presenting graduate research, thereby alleviating frustration on the part of both student and advisor. It presents specific guidelines and examples throughout the text along with more detailed examples in reader-friendly appendices at the end. By being more organized and prepared to handle basic research management functions, graduate students, along with their advisors, will have more time for actual intellectual mentoring and knowledge transfer, resulting in a more rewarding research experience.

Human Factors - Psychologie sicheren Handelns in Risikobranchen

by Petra Badke-Schaub Gesine Hofinger Kristina Lauche

Facing Our Futures: How foresight, futures design and strategy creates prosperity and growth

by Nikolas Badminton

A fascinating insight into how professionals and businesses can develop their foresight and strategy to ensure that they are prepared for an unpredictable future.Businesses, organizations and society-at-large are all subject to unforeseeable events and incidents that often have a dramatic impact upon prosperity and profit. Due to their unpredictable nature, business leaders and executive teams are unable to prepare for these specific events. But, through innovation, strategizing and an open-minded approach, they can restructure their organization and practices in order to mitigate (or even take advantage of) the impact of such events. In Facing Our Futures, Nikolas Badminton draws upon his decades of experience as a consultant and futurist to provide readers with the skillset and outlook they need to prepare their organization, team and themselves for whatever obstacles the future may hold. CEOs, executive teams, government leaders and policy makers need to gain a broader perspective and a firmer grasp on how their relevant industry, society or community is evolving and changing. Once they have acquired this foresight, they need to then discover how to fully harness it – by strengthening their foundations, forecasting and establishing a resilient and adaptable strategy. Facing Our Futures acts as a primer on the value of seeing how bad things can get and the power in imagining these futures. It also provides a proven strategic planning and foresight methodology - the Positive Dystopia Canvas (PDC) - that allows leaders to supercharge their teams to build evocative visions of futures that strengthen planning today.

Smart Digital Service Ecosystems: A Research Roadmap from Service Computing and Engineering Perspectives (SpringerBriefs in Service Science)

by Youakim Badr

This book provides a holistic overview of the major advances that have been made in the context of Service Science with a focus on IT-enabled services. To address challenges in collaborative, social-centric, ad-hoc, dynamic and open environments, the book studies IT-enabled service systems from two distinct but complementary research perspectives: service engineering and service computing. From a service engineering view, the book shows how to apply a systemic approach to tackle social problems from holistic and multi-disciplinary perspectives by focusing on service systems and developing a service design framework, including socio-technical aspects, the service reference model, data-driven collaboration processes, the incremental design method, requirement propagation, and system adaptability with feedback loops. From a service computing view, the book introduces a service-oriented aided infrastructure to support IT-enabled service systems in ICT-facilitated environments and provide access to tangible and intangible resources in a trustworthy environment. The book offers a valuable companion and comprehensive reference guide for undergraduate and graduate students who want to learn about current concepts for designing and implementing service systems; and for researchers who want to identify future directions in build smart digital service ecosystems, integrating Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cyber-security. The book also appeals to developers who need to implement advanced services and want to capitalize on corresponding business models, customer-driven interaction, and scalable architectures.

This book puts forward proposals for the management and exploitation of intellectual property, and for establishing businesses.

Multinational Companies in Low-Income Markets: An Analysis of Social Embeddedness in Southeast Asia

by Dina Badry

“Alleviating poverty through the pursuit of profit” has become a catch phrase for many entrepreneurs and business people who started to focus their businesses on the lower incomes segments of the population at the “Base of the Pyramid” (BOP). Despite such business interests, there is, as yet, insufficient theoretical and empirical work done in this emerging field. Social embeddedness, which facilitates the leveraging of local knowledge and expertise and the earning of the trust of the local people, is deemed essential for the successful implementation of a BOP strategy. What does social embeddedness mean? What does it entail for the businesses? How should businesses be embedded in the local networks? Dina Badry seeks to answer these questions in her excellent dissertation through her conceptualization and empirical research which examines the different strategic intentions of business units operation at the BOP level and their potential network partners, following social network theory. I have little doubt that this study has contributed to our understanding of social embeddedness and will prove itself to be invaluable for academics as well as practitioners. Prof. Dr. Li-Choy Chong VII Acknowledgements Writing this dissertation has been a significant academic and personal challenge in my life. Fortunately, I have received invaluable support, patience and guidance from many people to whom I want to express my sincere gratitude. I would like to thank my dissertation committee, Prof. Dr. Li-Choy Chong and Prof. Dr.
