Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Platform: An Advanced Guide

by Andrew Troelsen

Microsoft Visual Basic .NET provides the productivity features developers need to rapidly create enterprise-critical web applications. In Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Platform: An Advanced Guide, author Andrew Troelsen shows experienced developers how to use VB .NET for developing virtually every possible kind of .NET application. From Windows-based to web-based applications, ADO .NET, XML Web services, and object-oriented language features, it's all here. There are detailed discussions of every aspect of .NET development and useful examples with no toy code. Troelsen starts with a brief philosophy of the VB .NET language and then quickly moves to key technical and architectural issues for .NET developers. Not only is there extensive coverage of the .NET Framework, but Troelsen also describes the object-oriented features of VB .NET including inheritance and interface-based programming techniques. Youll also learn how to use VB .NET for object serialization, how to access data with ADO.NET, and how to build (and interact with) .NET Web Services, and how to access legacy COM applications. Written in the same five-star style as Troelson's previous two books, Developer's Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0 and C# and the .NET Platform, this is the comprehensive book on using VB .NET to build .NET applications that you've been waiting for! Wavelets in Numerical Simulation: Problem Adapted Construction and Applications (Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering #22)

by Karsten Urban

Sapere aude! Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) Numerical simulations playa key role in many areas of modern science and technology. They are necessary in particular when experiments for the underlying problem are too dangerous, too expensive or not even possible. The latter situation appears for example when relevant length scales are below the observation level. Moreover, numerical simulations are needed to control complex processes and systems. In all these cases the relevant problems may become highly complex. Hence the following issues are of vital importance for a numerical simulation: - Efficiency of the numerical solvers: Efficient and fast numerical schemes are the basis for a simulation of 'real world' problems. This becomes even more important for realtime problems where the runtime of the numerical simulation has to be of the order of the time span required by the simulated process. Without efficient solution methods the simulation of many problems is not feasible. 'Efficient' means here that the overall cost of the numerical scheme remains proportional to the degrees of freedom, i. e. , the numerical approximation is determined in linear time when the problem size grows e. g. to upgrade accuracy. Of course, as soon as the solution of large systems of equations is involved this requirement is very demanding.

Web Engineering and Peer-to-Peer Computing: NETWORKING 2002 Workshops, Pisa, Italy, May 19-24, 2002, Revised Papers (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #2376)

by Enrico Gregori Ludmila Cherkasova Gianpaolo Cugola Fabio Panzieri Gian P. Picco

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the two thematic workshops held jointly with Networking 2002: WEB Engineering and Peer-to-Peer C- puting. Networking 2002 was organized by the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and was sponsored by the IFIP working groups WG 6.2 (Network and Intern- work Architectures), WG 6.3 (Performance of Communication Systems), and WG 6.8 (Wireless Communications). The program of the conference covered ?ve days and included the main conference (three days), two tutorial days, and one day of thematic workshops. TheInternationalWorkshoponWebEngineeringwasdedicatedtothedisc- sionoftheprincipalissuesthatemergeinthedesignandimplementationoflar- scale, complex, Web-based systems. Scalability issues pose a number of ch- lenging problems to solve for both applications and the underlying web/network infrastructure. On one hand, web services and internet applications must take into account network performance and transport protocol design, to achieve - ceptable performance and robustness. On the other hand, emerging network and Web technologies are determined by the requirements of these applications. Fifteen papers were presented that illustrated the current state of the art in this area. In addition to the authors of these papers, the Workshop on Web Engine- ing was attended by about thirty participants, who contributed to the workshop by stimulating fruitful discussions at the end of each presentation. Thus, this workshop provided a excellent opportunity for researchers, from both industry and academia, to gather, exchange ideas, and discuss recent results in the dev- opment of Web-based systems and emerging Internet applications.

WEBKDD 2001 - Mining Web Log Data Across All Customers Touch Points: Third International Workshop, San Francisco, CA, USA, August 26, 2001, Revised Papers (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #2356)

by Ron Kohavi Brij M. Masand Myra Spiliopoulou Jaideep Srivastava

WorkshopTheme The ease and speed with which business transactions can be carried out over the Web has been a key driving force in the rapid growth of electronic commerce. In addition, customer interactions, including personalized content, e-mail c- paigns, and online feedback provide new channels of communication that were not previously available or were very ine?cient. The Web presents a key driving force in the rapid growth of electronic c- merceandanewchannelforcontentproviders.Knowledgeaboutthecustomeris fundamental for the establishment of viable e-commerce solutions. Rich web logs provide companies with data about their customers and prospective customers, allowing micro-segmentation and personalized interactions. Customer acqui- tion costs in the hundreds of dollars per customer are common, justifying heavy emphasis on correct targeting. Once customers are acquired, customer retention becomes the target. Retention through customer satisfaction and loyalty can be greatly improved by acquiring and exploiting knowledge about these customers and their needs. Althoughweblogsarethesourceforvaluableknowledgepatterns, oneshould keep in mind that the Web is only one of the interaction channels between a company and its customers. Data obtained from conventional channels provide invaluable knowledge on existing market segments, while mobile communication adds further customer groups. In response, companies are beginning to integrate multiple sources of data including web, wireless, call centers, and brick-a- mortar store data into a single data warehouse that provides a multifaceted view of their customers, their preferences, interests, and expectations.

Wild Duck: Empirische Philosophie der Mensch-Computer-Vernetzung

by Gunter Dueck

Wireless Communication Technologies: New MultiMedia Systems (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science #564)

by Norihiko Morinaga Ryuji Kohno Seiichi Sampei

During 12-15 of September 1999, 10th International Symposium on P- sonal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC’99) was held in Osaka Japan, and it was really a successful symposium that accommodated more than 600 participants from more than 30 countries and regions. PIMRC is really well organized annual symposium for wireless multimedia commu- cation systems, in which, various up-to-date topics are discussed in the invited talk, panel discussions and tutorial sessions. One of the unique features of the PIMRC is that PIMRC is continuing to publish, from Kluwer Academic Publishers since 1997, a book that collects the hottest topics discussed in PIMRC. In PIMRC’97, Invited talks were sum- rized in “Wireless Communications –TDMA versus CDMA – (ISBN 0-7923- 8005-3),” and it was published just beforePIMRC’97. This book was also distributed to all the PIMRC’97 participants as a part of proceedings for the conference. In PIMRC’98, extendedversion of the invited papers were s- marized in Wireless Multimedia Network Technologies (ISBN 0-7923-8633- 7) and published in September 1999, which is almost the same timing for the PIMRC’99. In the case of PIMRC’99, to produce more informative book, we have - lected topics that attracted many PIMRC’99 participants during the conf- ence, and invited prospective authors not only from the invited speakers but also from tutorial speakers, panel organizers, panelists, and some other exc- lent PIMRC’99 participants.

Wireless Multimedia Network Technologies (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science #524)

by Rajamani Ganesh Kaveh Pahlavan Zoran Zvonar

This book is a collection of invited papers that were presented at the Ninth IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, September 5-8, 1998, Boston, MA. These papers are meant to provide a global view of the emerging third-generation wireless networks in the wake of the third millennium. Following the tradition of the PIMRC conferences, the papers are selected to strike a balance between the diverse interests of academia and industry by addressing issues of interest to the designers, manufacturers, and service providers involved in the wireless networking industry. The tradition of publishing a collection of the invited papers presented at the PIMRC started in PIMRC’97, Helsinki, Finland. There are two benefits to this tradition (1) it provides a shorter version of the proceedings of the conference that is more focused on a specific theme (2) the papers are comprehensive and are subject of a more careful review process to improve the contents as well as the presentation of the material, making it more appealing for archival as a reference book. The production costs of the book is subsidized by the conference and the editors have donated the royalty income of the book to the conference.

Wireless Network Deployments (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science #558)

by Rajamani Ganesh Kaveh Pahlavan

An important aspect of wireless networks is the deployment of their infrastructure. In this book, the Editors have invited a number of experts from industry to write on a variety of topics associated with deployment of digital wireless networks. The first part of the book consists of an overview of systems design and engineering integration, comparison of polarization and space diversity antenna systems, and the performance of deploying smart antenna architectures in cellular and PCS networks. The second part addresses deployment of CDMA networks, based on IS-95 standards. Here the authors discuss issues related to optimization of overlaid dual model CDMA networks, embedding microcells to improve hot-spot capacity, and mitigation of intermodulation distortion in handsets. Part III deals with deployment of TDMA- based networks. The issues presented include developing hierarchical systems, reconfigurable transceivers, and deploying the GSM frequency hopping feature for enhancing existing traffic capacity. The last part, on Wireless Data Networks, is comprised of issues related to the performance of GPRS systems deployed as an upgrade on current networks and deployment of wireless LANs. Critical issues for deploying an IEEE 802.11-based WLAN are examined. Wireless Network Deployments provides practical engineering guidance for wireless and cellular engineers, researchers, technicians, and managers working in second and third generation digital wireless networks.

XML-Based Data Management and Multimedia Engineering - EDBT 2002 Workshops: EDBT 2002 Workshops XMLDM, MDDE, and YRWS, Prague, Czech Republic, March 24-28, 2002, Revised Papers (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #2490)

by Akmal B. Chaudhri Chabane Djeraba Rainer Unland Wolfgang Lindner

This volume comprises papers from the following three workshops that were part of the complete program for the International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT) held in Prague, Czech Republic, in March 2002: XML-Based Data Management (XMLDM) Second International Workshop on Multimedia Data and Document Engineering (MDDE) Young Researchers Workshop (YRWS) Together, the three workshops featured 48 high-quality papers selected from approximately 130 submissions. It was, therefore, difficult to decide on the papers that were to be accepted for presentation. We believe that the accepted papers substantially contribute to their particular fields of research. The workshops were an excellent basis for intense and highly fruitful discussions. The quality and quantity of papers show that the areas of interest for the workshops are highly active. A large number of excellent researchers are working in relevant fields producing research output that is not only of interest to other researchers but also for industry. The organizers and participants of the workshops were highly satisfied with the output. The high quality of the presenters and workshop participants contributed to the success of each workshop. The amazing environment of Prague and the location of the EDBT conference also contributed to the overall success. Last, but not least, our sincere thanks to the conference organizers – the organizing team was always willing to help and if there were things that did not work, assistance was quickly available.
