The relevance of commutator methods in spectral and scattering theory has been known for a long time, and numerous interesting results have been ob­ tained by such methods. The reader may find a description and references in the books by Putnam [Pu], Reed-Simon [RS] and Baumgartel-Wollenberg [BW] for example. A new point of view emerged around 1979 with the work of E. Mourre in which the method of locally conjugate operators was introduced. His idea proved to be remarkably fruitful in establishing detailed spectral properties of N-body Hamiltonians. A problem that was considered extremely difficult be­ fore that time, the proof of the absence of a singularly continuous spectrum for such operators, was then solved in a rather straightforward manner (by E. Mourre himself for N = 3 and by P. Perry, 1. Sigal and B. Simon for general N). The Mourre estimate, which is the main input of the method, also has consequences concerning the behaviour of N-body systems at large times. A deeper study of such propagation properties allowed 1. Sigal and A. Soffer in 1985 to prove existence and completeness of wave operators for N-body systems with short range interactions without implicit conditions on the potentials (for N = 3, similar results were obtained before by means of purely time-dependent methods by V. Enss and by K. Sinha, M. Krishna and P. Muthuramalingam). Our interest in commutator methods was raised by the major achievements mentioned above.

The bulk of known results in spectral and scattering theory for Schrodinger operators has been derived by time-independent (also called stationary) methods, which make extensive use of re­ solvent estimates and the spectral theorem. In very recent years there has been a partial shift of emphasis from the time-indepen­ dent to the time-dependent theory, due to the discovery of new, essentially time-dependent proofs of a fair number of the principal results such as asymptotic completeness, absence of singularly con­ tinuous spectrum and properties of scattering cross sections. These new time-dependent arguments are somewhat simpler than the station­ ary ones and at the same time considerably closer to physical in­ tuition, in that they are based on a rather detailed description of the time evolution of states in configUration space (whence the designation "geometric methods" used by some authors). It seemed interesting to me to present some of these new meth­ ods from a strictly time-dependent point of view, by considering as the basic mathematical object strongly continuous unitary one­ parameter groups and avoiding the spectral theorem completely. The present volume may be viewed as an essay in this spirit. It is an extended version of a course taught in 1979 at the University of Geneva to undergraduate students enrolled in mathematical physics.

The idea for the present Spilite Volume was born during the Spilite Symposium at the XXIIIrd session of the International Geological Con­ gress in Prague, 1968. At that time, only a restricted number of petro­ logists working on spilites was present and, therefore, the group assem­ bled agreed that a Symposium Volume should also include recent papers by many other spilite specialists. At the same time it was agreed that the papers presented at the Symposium should be returned to the authors for changes and additions. This procedure of upgrading and amending the papers has continued until this year (1973) for various technical and editorial reasons. The information presented here is, therefore, up-to­ date. To those familiar with the spilite problem it is obvious that the time had come for a review of its state. For readers not necessarily familiar with the spilite problem, a brief summary is presented here. A short historical note is followed first by the observations, then by the interpretations, finally by some of the major features of scientific logic as they pertain to the problem of the primary or secondary origin of some of the rocks termed spilites and keratophyres.

This book is the first of its kind on environmental change research devoted to monsoon-arid environment evolution history and its mechanism involved. Capturing the most prominent features of Asian climate and environmental changes, it gives a comprehensive review of the Asian Monsoon records providing evidence for spatial and temporal climatic and environmental changes across the Asian continent since the Late Cenozoic. The dynamics underlying these changes are explored based on various bio-geological records and in particular based on the evidence of loess, speleothems as well as on mammal fossils.
