Making Assessment Matter

by Graham Butt

Teachers often spend a considerable amount of their time monitoring and assessing their pupils' performance. But what are we assessing for, and can assessment practices be changed to make them more useful to teachers and learners? Assessment activities in schools are frequently criticised by government inspectors - often being reported as the least successful aspect of schools' work. Drawing on established research, Making Assessment Matter focuses on the purpose of assessment, and suggests strategies for managing assessment in a more effective way. The author considers the role of assessment in promoting learning, rather than simply measuring it, provides tips on setting and attaining assessment targets, and brings together considerations of 'high stakes' assessment at the national level with day-to-day assessment practice in the classroom. This timely and informative book will be essential reading for anyone involved with, or interested in, the role of assessment within schools, including teachers, trainee teachers and managers.

Playing With History: The Historical Approach To Musical Performance (PDF) (Musical Performance And Reception Ser.)

by John Butt Laurence Dreyfus

Why do we feel the need to perform music in a historically informed style? Is this need related to wider cultural concerns? In this study, John Butt sums up debates on the nature of the early music movement and historically informed performance, calling upon a seemingly inexhaustible fund of ideas gleaned from historical musicology, analytic philosophy, literary theory, historiography and theories of modernism and postmodernism. He develops the critical views of both supporters and detractors of the movement, while claiming ultimately that it has more intellectual and artistic potential than its detractors may have assumed. He also asks whether the phenomenon of historically informed performance reflects changes in the culture of western music and how it, in turn, may have influenced that culture, particularly in regard to such issues as the status of the composer, the work, intentionality and notation.

BNVR: The Butt Non-Verbal Reasoning Test

by Pamela Butt Romola Bucks

The BNVR Test is a unique non-linguistic approach for identifying whether a cognitive (problem-solving) deficit as well as a linguistic deficit exists in individuals with acquired aphasia. Recognising cognitive deficits in terms of problem-solving may be a key factor in understanding why some individuals overcome their communication difficulties better than others. Failure to recognise problem-solving difficulties may lead to unrealistic expectations of therapeutic intervention and thus inappropriate management and goal setting. The BNVR requires the client to solve 10 everyday problems, presented in full-colour photographic format. It is short, requires minimal linguistic input, contains real-life situations and is likely to be suitable for non-English speaking individuals. It will be useful to speech language therapists, occupational therapists and psychologists who need to ascertain whether problem-solving skills are affected and to assist in multi-disciplinary team decision-making in acute and rehabilitation settings.

Routledge Revivals: The Lindsay Memorial Lectures given at the University College of North Staffordshire (Routledge Revivals)

by Herbert Butterfield

First published in 1962, this book comprises lectures given in November 1961 to what was then the University College of North Staffordshire. It deals with the aims, rather than the administrative problems of the Universities, to put at the forefront of the reader’s mind the fundamentals of University organisation, structure, and development. Butterfield has in mind the needs of undergraduates, and tries to concentrate attention on that electric contact between teacher and student for the sake of which all our elaborate educational machinery exists. He examines the position of the teacher, the status and function of an academic profession, and the relations between teaching and research.

Armut von Kindern mit Migrationshintergrund: Ausmaß, Erscheinungsformen und Ursachen

by Carolin Butterwegge

by Christoph Butterwegge Michael Klundt Matthias Belke-Zeng
