Learner-Centered Teaching Activities for Environmental and Sustainability Studies

by Loren B. Byrne

Learner-centered teaching is a pedagogical approach that emphasizes the roles of students as participants in and drivers of their own learning. Learner-centered teaching activities go beyond traditional lecturing by helping students construct their own understanding of information, develop skills via hands-on engagement, and encourage personal reflection through metacognitive tasks. In addition, learner-centered classroom approaches may challenge students’ preconceived notions and expand their thinking by confronting them with thought-provoking statements, tasks or scenarios that cause them to pay closer attention and cognitively “see” a topic from new perspectives. Many types of pedagogy fall under the umbrella of learner-centered teaching including laboratory work, group discussions, service and project-based learning, and student-led research, among others. Unfortunately, it is often not possible to use some of these valuable methods in all course situations given constraints of money, space, instructor expertise, class-meeting and instructor preparation time, and the availability of prepared lesson plans and material. Thus, a major challenge for many instructors is how to integrate learner-centered activities widely into their courses. The broad goal of this volume is to help advance environmental education practices that help increase students’ environmental literacy. Having a diverse collection of learner-centered teaching activities is especially useful for helping students develop their environmental literacy because such approaches can help them connect more personally with the material thus increasing the chances for altering the affective and behavioral dimensions of their environmental literacy. This volume differentiates itself from others by providing a unique and diverse collection of classroom activities that can help students develop their knowledge, skills and personal views about many contemporary environmental and sustainability issues.

The Names of God in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam: A Basis for Interfaith Dialogue

by Máire Byrne

This book offers a welcome solution to the growing need for a common language in interfaith dialogue; particularly between the three Abrahamic faiths in our modern pluralistic society. The book suggests that the names given to God in the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Qur'an, could be the very foundations and building blocks for a common language between the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths. On both a formal interfaith level, as well as between everyday followers of each doctrine, this book facilitates a more fruitful and universal understanding and respect of each sacred text; exploring both the commonalities and differences between each theology and their individual receptions. In a practical application of the methodologies of comparative theology, Maire Byrne shows that the titles, names and epithets given to God in the sacred texts of Judaism, Christianity and Islam contribute towards similar images of God in each case, and elucidates the importance of this for providing a viable starting point for interfaith dialogue.

Advanced Language Learning: The Contribution of Halliday and Vygotsky

by Heidi Byrnes

'The editor and authors in this volume make a convincing case for focusing on advanced foreign language instruction. Importantly, they invite consideration of this focus as an opportunity to re-examine conventional definitions of the target of instruction. In so doing, readers also learn more about the theories highlighted in this volume, and their capacity to enhance our understanding of advancedness and its development within an educational context. This book thus mediates between linguistic and language learning theories and educational practice, modelling the very best of what applied linguistics has to offer.'Diane Larsen-Freeman, Professor of Education, University of Michigan. The reality of multicultural societies and globalization has increased the demand for language abilities that far exceed those that have typically been associated with communicative competence in a second language. This book examines the acquisition of advanced levels of ability in three parts: theoretical; descriptive; and instructional. It moves beyond the traditional constraints of second language acquisition research by linking systemic functional linguistics and sociocultural theory. The contributors draw primarily on the work of Halliday, Vygotsky and Bakhtin, as well as empirical data from the language classroom, to suggest practical applications towards advanced literacy and linguistic competence. Advanced Language Learning will be of interest to academics researching systemic functional linguistics, second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

The Emerald Handbook of Higher Education in a Post-Covid World: New Approaches and Technologies for Teaching and Learning

by Byron A. Brown and Alastair Irons

Teaching and learning paradigms in higher education have been called into question by the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring new approaches, technologies, and resilience. The disruption caused to higher education operations prompted many to raise questions about HEI’s adaptability and readiness to handle major disasters. Focussing particularly on developing countries in Africa and the Global South, The Emerald Handbook of Higher Education in a Post-Covid World emphasizes the urgent need to reform pedagogical models and the importance of recognizing and utilizing digital learning technologies, tools, and the power of the Internet to expand the range of teaching approaches, practices and learning interaction options in an age in which information communication technology and mobile devices have become commonplace in the daily life of students, academic leaders and HE practitioners. The contributors also address the importance of supporting the individual student in learning communities where they are separated by space, and safeguarding their social and emotional wellbeing as they engage and learn through mediated-communication-systems in an era of a fundamentally changed HE environment which will not completely return to previous models. Providing perspectives from contributors across multiple nations and settings, and written in a forthright, yet engaging manner, this volume is essential reading for higher education staff, researchers, and policy makers, to ensure higher education across the world is prepared to offer the best quality teaching and learning in the Covid and Post-Covid world.
