Defend Your Licence: A Driver's Manual
by Andrea CleggSince founding her business in Road Traffic Defence, experienced lawyer Andrea Clegg has been inundated by clients asking questions about motoring law. Andrea quickly realised how little reliable knowledge and information motorists have available to them about the laws of the road, with many making decisions about whether to accept affixed penalty ticket or a summons based on misconceptions. Defend Your Licence is a practical and helpful guide to motorists, combining accurate law with a clear guide on how to deal with driving related issues should they choose to represent themselves against motoring offence charges. There are many prosecutions which are unjustified and merely accepted by motorists. The system is now prosecuted by the police who in some areas offer advice to the defendant, thus playing the role of prosecutor and defender. Motorists are often poorly guided and represented. As the roads get busier and more regulations are brought in and enforced, the motorist will suffer if they do not improve their legal knowledge. By reading Defend Your Licence motorists everywhere will be better equipped and protected.

In Love with Supervision: Creating transformative conversations
by Robin Shohet Joan ShohetRobin and Joan Shohet are pioneers in supervision training for the helping professions. Much more than a manual, this book embodies the heart, soul, spirit and values of their training courses - a golden treasury of insight, wisdom and practical techniques. Its detailed descriptions of their courses apply directly to the work of the helping professions and the therapeutic relationship; what they say apply also to how we all negotiate relationships in our work and our lives. The book opens with the '23 principles' that form the basis of their beliefs about the role and function of supervision. It goes on to describe in detail five of the courses they have been running for some 40 years. These are vivid scripts taken directly from course recordings, bringing to life the interactions, exchanges and relationships played out in the training process. Here we have the Core Course, the Seven-Eyed Model, the Group Supervision Course, the Advanced Course, and the one-day workshop Fear and Love in Supervision. The book ends with a bank of resources drawn from Robin's published writings over the years. These are bold, brave, sometimes raw and always deeply honest accounts of the Shohets' inspirational supervision training - each accompanied by one of Joan's cake recipes.

Writing Analytical Assessments In Social Work (2nd Edition) (PDF)
by Chris DykeWriting assessments and reports is a core part of a social worker's role. Yet Ofsted, courts and research all identify a lack of analytical rigour in social work reports. Many are overlong, descriptive reports where what is needs is the application of professional judgement, a clear analysis and the ability to pull out causal relationships. Writing Analytical Assessments in Social Work is a guide to the principles of good writing and methodically shows you: how to analyse how to structure the process of writing an assessment (researching, chronologising, informed data-gathering, putting it all together), and how to get this done under time constraints. Written in an accessible way and packed with examples and case studies, this book is both practically-minded and constantly returning to first principles: reminding you what it is you are trying to achieve and teaching you how to write reports that can be read by families and judges alike. You will learn how to write high quality, useful and timely assessments without becoming mechanistic or managerial. It aims to kill the myth of a trade-off between efficiency and quality of work.
Making Sense of Theory and its Application to Social Work Practice
by Phil MussonDo you struggle to get your head around the application of theory and associated methods of intervention to social work practice? Making sense of theory and its application to social work practice is here to help you with a fresh approach written with the ‘non- theoretician’ in mind. After exploring the expectations and limits of application of theory to practice, Phil Musson sets about describing theories of explanation and their associated methods of intervention in an accessible way. He follows this by looking at theoretically driven approaches and their associated methods of intervention. One generic case study is used throughout, tweaked slightly but maintaining the same service users and issues so you can see how the theory of explanation or approach and the associated method of intervention is applied. You are also able to sharpen up your critical thinking skills as the author invites you to reflect on the theories of explanation and approaches discussed. Making Sense of Theory and its Application to Social Work Practice will be immensely valuable to both social work students and practitioners.
Art as Extraordinary Science: A paradigm for the 21st century
by Jenny WallerArt education has gone through a number of paradigms since its origins in the medieval guilds. Yet ever since joining the university system in the 1970s, art departments have struggled to articulate a contemporary paradigm which accurately reflects what they do, to the extent that it often seems more realistic to say that art can’t be taught at all. At the same time, science departments have struggled with the problem first noted by science historian Thomas Kuhn in 1962 – that the history of science depends on the creative brilliance of ‘extraordinary scientists’ who yet have no place within the confines of traditional university teaching. In this book, Jenny Waller argues that both these problems result from our assumptions about what counts as education. Taking the axes of Articulation and Acceptance by the university disciplines, she creates a grid-matrix of educational assumptions resulting in the quadrants Professional Practice, Normal Science, Extraordinary science and Voodoo. Then using the findings from a year-long ethnographic study of Fine Art studio teaching in a university department, she shows how contemporary art teaching fits into the quadrant of extraordinary science, providing a powerful contemporary paradigm for what art educators do. At the same time, her analysis of how art is taught provides science teachers with a blueprint for developing the potential of their students to be truly extraordinary. “This articulation…makes an original and significant contribution to the current literature on teaching and learning practices in the creative arts.” Professor Bruce Brown, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for research, University of Brighton
