by Julia PeukeDer Zeitgeschichte wird aufgrund ihrer Nähe zur Gegenwart und der Zugänglichkeit zu Quellen besonderes Potenzial für das historisch-politische Lernen im Sachunterricht zugeschrieben. Ausgehend von diesem Grundgedanken befasst sich das vorliegende Buch mit der Frage, welche Theorien Kinder zur DDR und damit auch zur deutschen Teilungsgeschichte haben und wie sich diese in den Diskurs zum zeithistorischen Lernen in der Grundschule einordnen lassen. Dabei wird zudem das Machtkonzept der Kinder vertieft in den Blick genommen. Anhand der Befunde der qualitativen Studie wird die Verschränkung von Zeitgeschichte mit politischen Konzepten und somit auch dem historischen und politischen Lernen deutlich.

by John T SmithVillages and towns in the Victorian era saw a great expansion in educational provision, and witnessed the rise of the elementary teaching profession, often provided and supported by local clergymen. This book investigates the social and economic relationships of such clergymen and teachers who worked co-operatively and at times in competition with each other, their relative positions typified by the comment of one contemporary clergyman as 'those of master and servant'. The inevitable result was a complex of movements in society in the final third of the nineteenth century that led to increasing clashes in villages, as one group (the clergy) sought to preserve its hold on its status and power, while the other (male and female teachers) attempted to secure their new role in society. The research presented is based on previously unused, original sources -- church documents, HMI reports, newspapers and journals and private papers. It is not confined, as is the case with so much recent research, to the Church of England, but breaks new ground in providing a comparative analysis of the social position and educational work of Roman Catholic and Wesleyan clergy, and their collaboration with their elementary school teachers. This book is essential reading for all those interested in Victorian Education.

Jensen argues that because the show's domestic production was not financially viable from the beginning, Sesame Street became a commodity that its producers assertively marketed all over the world. Sesame Street: A Transnational History combines archival research from seven countries, bolstering an insightful analysis of how local reception and rejection of the show related to the global sales strategies and American ideals it was built upon. Contrary to the producers' oft-publicized claims of Sesame Street's universality, the show was heavily shaped by a fixed set of assumptions about childhood, education, and commercial entertainment. This made sales difficult as Sesame Street met both skepticism and direct hostility from foreign television producers who did not share these ideals. Drawing on insights from new histories about childhood, education, and transnational media, the book lays bare a cultural clash of international proportions rooted in divergent approaches to children's television. In doing so, it provides a reflective backdrop to the many ongoing debates about children's media. In contrasting the positive receptions and renunciations of Sesame Street, Jensen demonstrates that it was only after a substantial rethinking of Sesame Street's aims and business model that this program ended up on numerous broadcasting schedules by the mid-1970s. Along the way, this rethinking and the constant negotiations with potential international buyers created and shaped the business and corporate brand that paved the way for the Sesame Street we know today.
