Women's Writing in Italy, 1400–1650

by Virginia Cox

This is the first comprehensive study of the remarkably rich tradition of women’s writing that flourished in Italy between the fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Virginia Cox documents this tradition and both explains its character and scope and offers a new hypothesis on the reasons for its emergence and decline. Cox combines fresh scholarship with a revisionist argument that overturns existing historical paradigms for the chronology of early modern Italian women’s writing and questions the historiographical commonplace that the tradition was brought to an end by the Counter Reformation. Using a comparative analysis of women's activities as artists, musicians, composers, and actresses, Cox locates women's writing in its broader contexts and considers how gender reflects and reinvents conventional narratives of literary change.

Arrogant Bastard (Dark Desires #4)

by Zara Cox

I'm known as the Black Widow because the desires I hide inside are pure poison.I was a different person once. Faith, a young wife, hoping to become a mother. My life was pleasant. Stable. It was hell. Until Killian Knight opened my eyes to a world of espionage and intrigue. He saw something in me, something I was too afraid to acknowledge. I didn't want to be excited by the danger. Didn't want to crave the wicked passion only he could provide. But I did want, so now I run. And I pay. I never meant to corrupt her, but I'm not sorry. After all, I'm already damned. After four years of searching and longing, I've finally found her. Faith, the one person in the world I breathe for. She lives beneath my skin as surely as I wear proof of our transgressions inked on my body. And like the forbidden fruit that doomed us from the beginning, our end is inevitable. We lived with no regret. We loved without inhibition. We betrayed those closest to us. We killed for that love. Now...we will burn in hell together.Praise for Beautiful Liar:'An exotically filthy, devastatingly beautiful story, that will captivate and tease you long after the book is finished.' by Zara Cox

Axel Rutherford:She was my childhood sweetheart. I loved her more than my life. Now she belongs to my father. She's the trophy he'd rewarded himself with after sending me to war. What he didn't know was that she was mine before she was his. Oh wait, he knew. It was my punishment for daring to defy him. For daring to walk away. But she was mine first. And even though I hate her now, she's an addiction I cannot shake. And the truth is I never forgot her. Problem is my father hasn't forgotten either.I was his black sheep from the day I was born. The Prodigal Son. I still am. There's a price on my head for the secrets I carry. He looks at me with murder in his eyes.Which means claiming her again might mean death for her. It would mean the same for me if I cared about dying. I don't. But now my father's woman carries my child. I don't intend to stop. Not until I inherit the whole kingdom.Mercy Evans:My rock: the boy turned man who hates me but craves my body. My hard place: the father who hates his son but owns me. Literature and Medicine in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical Press: Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1817-1869 (Edinburgh Critical Studies in Romanticism)

by Megan Coyer

In the early nineteenth century, Edinburgh was the leading centre of medical education and research in Britain. It also laid claim to a thriving periodical culture. Literature and Medicine in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical Press investigates how Romantic periodicals cultivated innovative literary forms, ideologies and discourses that reflected and shaped medical culture in the nineteenth century. It examines several medically-trained contributors to Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, the most influential literary periodical of the time, and draws upon extensive archival and bibliographical research to reclaim these previously neglected medico-literary figures. Situating their work in relation to developments in medical and periodical culture, Megan Coyer’s book advances our understanding of how the nineteenth-century periodical press cross-fertilised medical and literary ideas.

Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince

by Martin Coyle

No text has attracted more controversy over the centuries than Machiavelli's The Prince. Placed on the Index of Prohibited Books by the Catholic Church in 1599, The Prince nevertheless proved to be the means by which Machiavelli came to be known throughout Europe, establishing his name as a byword for the cunning and unscrupulous politician.Written as the medieval world was giving way to the new dynamic of renaissance capitalism, The Prince embodies a whole series of vital issues that affect our understanding of modern politics, including power and morality, history and human nature, language and meaning, gender and government. It is these issues which the essays in this volume debate and explore from a variety of perspectives, from the original responses to The Prince through to feminist and deconstructive approaches. The result is a volume packed with ideas and insights. With contributions by international scholars and critics, a chronological table and select bibliography, this is an essential guide for anyone studying Machiavelli.
