The book provides a bridge between RL and data mining and machine learning research.

Stochastic Optimization Methods: Applications in Engineering and Operations Research

by Kurt Marti

This book examines optimization problems that in practice involve random model parameters. It outlines the computation of robust optimal solutions, i.e., optimal solutions that are insensitive to random parameter variations, where appropriate deterministic substitute problems are needed. Based on the probability distribution of the random data and using decision theoretical concepts, optimization problems under stochastic uncertainty are converted into corresponding deterministic problems.Due to the probabilities and expectations involved, the book also shows how to apply approximative solution techniques. Several deterministic and stochastic approximation methods are provided: Taylor expansion methods, regression and response surface methods (RSM), probability inequalities, multiple linearization of survival/failure domains, discretization methods, convex approximation/deterministic descent directions/efficient points, stochastic approximation and gradient procedures, and differentiation formulas for probabilities and expectations. The fourth edition of this classic text has been carefully and thoroughly revised. It includes new chapters on the solution of stochastic linear programs by discretization of the underlying probability distribution, and on solving deterministic optimization problems by means of controlled random search methods and multiple random search procedures. It also presents a new application of stochastic optimization methods to machine learning problems with different loss functions. For the computation of optimal feedback controls under stochastic uncertainty, besides the open-loop feedback procedures, a new method based on Taylor expansions with respect to the gain parameters is presented. The book is intended for researchers and graduate students who are interested in stochastics, stochastic optimization, and control. It will also benefit professionals and practitioners whose work involves technical, economicand/or operations research problems under stochastic uncertainty.

Industry and Innovation: Textile Industry (SDGs and Textiles)

by José Moleiro Martins

The primary objective of this book is to offer readers an insightful exploration into the realms of innovation and sustainability within the textile industry. As global competition intensifies, organizations are increasingly compelled to revisit and refine their business strategies, emphasizing the imperative for continuous innovation and adaptability. This shift towards innovation-centric strategies is driven by the pursuit of sustainability and a competitive advantage, underscoring innovation as the cornerstone for business growth and market expansion. Innovation not only opens avenues for companies to overhaul their business models and enhance process technologies but also enables them to achieve optimal productivity and minimize waste. In an era characterized by swift technological advancements, the demand for rapid information flow, and evolving consumer preferences, a firm’s capability to innovate emerges as a critical determinant of its growth, sustainability, and competitive positioning in the textile sector. Process innovation, which entails the adoption of novel or significantly improved manufacturing or delivery methodologies, plays a pivotal role. This could involve substantial modifications in techniques, equipment, and/or software, aimed at bolstering production efficiency, augmenting quality, or facilitating the creation and delivery of significantly improved or new products. Manufacturing firms, through their marketing departments, are in a constant quest for opportunities to develop new products to maintain their competitive edge. Organizations that lag in embracing innovation risk losing their market share and profitability as competitors seize the opportunity to outperform them. A firm’s innovative capabilities are instrumental in fostering long-term market sustainability and business growth by delivering unparalleled value to customers. Consequently, innovation is integral to corporate strategies for a myriad of reasons – from achieving more efficient production processes and enhancing market performance to cultivating a forward-thinking brand image and securing a sustainable competitive advantage.

Perturbed Functional Iterations: A Matrix Free Large-Scale Nonlinear System Solver in Applied Science with an Introduction to D-Mapping (Chapman & Hall/CRC Monographs and Research Notes in Mathematics)

by Suhrit Dey

Perturbed functional iterations (PFI) is a large‑scale nonlinear system solver. Nature is abundant with events simulated mathematically by nonlinear systems of equations and inequalities. These we call nonlinear models. Often, they are ill‑conditioned, meaning small changes in data causing huge changes in the output. PFI, previously called the perturbed iterative scheme (PIS), is a numerical method to solve nonlinear systems of equations in multidimensional space. Computational results demonstrate that this numerical method has some unique features, which have made it more practical for applications in engineering and applied mathematics. This book will guide readers in the proper use of PFI, both in theoretical and practical settings. Features: Ideal resource for postgraduates and professional researchers in science and engineering working in nonlinear systems Algorithmically simple enough for engineers and applied scientists to write their own software based on the contents

Empowering Independent Living using the ICF: An Unobtrusive Home Monitoring Sensor System for Older Adults

by Björn Friedrich

Functional decline in older adults can lead to an increased need of assistance or even moving to a nursing home. Utilising home automation, power and wearable sensors, the system developed by the author continuously keeps track of the functional status of older adults through monitoring their daily life and allows health care professionals to create individualised rehabilitation programmes based on the changes in the older adult’s functional capacity and performance in daily life. The system uses the taxonomy of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) by the World Health Organization (WHO). It links sensor data to fve ICF items from three ICF categories and measures their change over time. The system successfully passed the first pre-clinical validation step on the real-world data of the OTAGO study, a 10-month randomised pilot intervention study with 20 (pre-)frail older adults (aged ≥ 75 years). Since this research is in an early stage further clinical studies are needed to fully validate the system.
