In 2013—in the wake of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School—Johns Hopkins University Press published Reducing Gun Violence in America, a collection of essays written by the world’s leading experts on gun violence. Updated Evidence and Policy Developments on Reducing Gun Violence in America follows up on the state of American gun violence by analyzing new data, research, and policy developments one year after Sandy Hook. Over the course of ten substantive chapter addendums, contributors bring readers up-to-date on such varied topics as mental illness, domestic violence, background checks, illegal gun sales, and personalized guns. They describe the recent policy measures that have been enacted and suggest additional approaches that may help stem the violence. An essential companion to Reducing Gun Violence in America, the reliable, empirical research and legal analysis in this e-book will help lawmakers, opinion leaders, and concerned citizens identify policy changes to address gun violence, which takes an average of more than 80 lives every day in the United States.

"Updates in Colo-Proctology" covers the proceedings of the Anglo-Swiss Colo-Proctology Meeting held in St Moritz in 1990. The book contains the papers which were presented and dis cussed there by physicians of the various specialties concerned with the care of patients with diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The authors, each distinguished in a particular field, have contributed across a wide range of subjects and different dis ciplines. The topics covered include surgical and investigative techniques, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and specific infections. Being familiar with the previous literature, it is clear that little was really new among the themes presented in St Moritz, but few will deny that many of the techniques and methods of treatment described in this book are truly modern. Some contribute an entirely new dimension to the approach to well known colo-proctological conditions, while others may open up new paths for future research. In addition, in colo-proctology as in other disciplines, advances in treatment almost always bring new problems in the complications which attend them. These are the subject of some of the papers. Although it would be invidious to pick out individual contributions when there is so much that is new to talk about and so much that is old to be looked at in a new light, we should like to record how much we have enjoyed reading and collating these chapters. We hope that others will share our enthusiasm and pleasure.

Updates in Diagnostic Pathology (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #563)

by David C. Chhieng Gene P. Siegal

by CDs, but we continue to utilize the same general format of morning didactics and afternoon glass slide review and small group interactions. One of our biggest successes was in the ever-expanding set of didactic lecture notes and radiologic, gross, microscopic, ultrastructural, and other images that course participants received, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when we were approached by the publisher to consider creating an updated compilation of some of the best talks and packaging them in a monograph available to a broader population of physicians and scientists. With the extraordinary attention to detail that he is known for, my co-editor David Chhieng has been both the brains and the brawn of this project, resulting in the bringing together of such a collection while trying to be sensitive and representative of the various branches of pathology reflected in the actual course. From surgical pathology, chapters cover select topics in endocrine, gynecologic, GU, and GI pathology with contributions from Walter Bell, Michael Conner, Katrin Klemm, and Audrey Lazenby, respectively. Tom Winokur has begun to prepare us for the near future with a treatise on molecular markers in breast cancer. The interactive nature of cytopathology and surgical pathology are brought together by Claudia Castro [now at the U. T. Medical Branch at Galveston] and David Chhieng in three chapters covering mediastinal, pleural, and pulmonary pathology.

Updates in Emergency Medicine

by John D. Cahill

Since the beginning of mankind, medical emergencies have existed. However, only in the last several decades has the specialty of emergency medicine developed. The United States and the United Kingdom were probably the first to recognize the need for a physician to be properly trained in this discipline. It quickly became evident that many lives could be saved by physicians trained in this art. Now is an exciting time for the field, as more and more countries have recognized this and are developing training programs in emergency medicine. This book is based upon a course in emergency medicine that was held in Ireland in the fall of 2001 and on several other lectures given that year. The course was held at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was a joint effort of faculty comprised from the Brown University program in Emergency Medicine, Providence, Rhode Island and Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. The goals of the course were to introduce the basic principles and practice of emergency medicine, to present some cutting edge topics, and to help encourage an interest in developing an academic training program in emergency medicine in Ireland. I hope that this collection of papers will be enjoyed by: medical students, residents, attending physicians, and by all who pursue an interest in emergency medicine. It is not intended to be a comprehensive text on emergency medicine. The purpose is to present some pertinent topics and observations from experienced physicians in a scientific and evidence-based fashion.

Updates on Clostridioides difficile in Europe: Advances in Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Public Health Volume 18 (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology #1435)

by Paola Mastrantonio Maja Rupnik

This fully updated second edition outlines the currently available clinical, epidemiological and experimental data on Clostridioides difficile infections(CDI) with special emphasis on studies and results achieved in Europe. The incidence and severity of CDI has increased significantly over the last decade, and the book explains why C. difficile, recently reclassified as Clostridioides difficile, remains a significant challenge, also from economic perspective, to health care systems all over the world. The different reservoirs of this ubiquitous microorganism are reviewed as well as the different factors contributing to its virulence, such as toxins and biofilm formation. The rapid evolution of antibiotic resistance is clearly a concern and in a specific way can influence the CDI epidemiology. Additionally, new emerging strains and comparative genomics studies are taken into consideration for their relevance from epidemiological and evolutionary point of view. The book also gives an overview on diagnostics, therapy and surveillance, all of which are still challenging. Therefore, a closer look is taken on the effect of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics, for prevention and treatment of CDI. Fecal transplantation from healthy donors, passive immunotherapies and vaccines for patients with recurrences are also discussed in dedicated chapters. New topics included sporulation and membrane vesicles in C. difficile. The book closes with a summary of the history and the achievements of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Study Group for Clostridium difficile (ESGCD) written by the current and past presidents of the Society. It is the aim of this book to raise awareness on CDI and to disseminate updated information on its prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Updating in Headache

by OttarSjaastad Per-OlovLundberg VolkerPfaffenrath

In September 1983 the First International Headache Congress took place, the founding congress of the International Headache Society (lHS). This meeting was attended by around 200 headache specialists from some 20 countries. One of the principal goals of the IHS, which was formed in London in 1982, is to promote and stimulate interest and research in the headache field. In addition to the sponsorship of continued-education events, this also involves the coordination of scientific pro jects and the organization of future conferences. There is no doubt that headaches represent an everyday problem in medical practice. When the first headache clinics were established some years ago, they were regarded as very progressive. Today there are special outpatient centers and clinics for headache patients. However, this specialization has certainly not progressed very far. The fact is that differential diagnosis and treatment of recurrent and chron ic headaches represents a broad field that cuts across many disciplines. Headaches are thus relevant not only to the neurologist, but also to the psychiatrist, the neuro surgeon, the internist, the endocrinologist, the psychologist, the pharmacologist, and the biochemist. Despite intensive research in numerous and very disparate medical disciplines there are still no generally accepted pathophysiologic concepts for many headache syndromes. Realizing the importance of a multidisciplinary fo rum, the IHS assumed the organization of this congress in collaboration with the German Migraine Society.

Upgrading Residues and By-products for Animals

by J. Tal Huber

Accumulation into one source of what is known regarding the feeding value of these materials and systems which have been developed for improving their digestibility, palatability or methods of handling was the motivation for organising this book. These has been an effort to include the major categories of unconventional materials which can potentially be upgraded to provide the ruminant with needed nutrients, but certainly some have been missed. It is hoped that this treatise will prove to be a valuable tool for workers involved in improving the utilization of residues and waste products for animals.
