Growing Old: Notes on ageing with something like grace

by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas

Elizabeth Marshall Thomas has spent a lifetime observing the natural world, chronicling the customs of pre-contact hunter-gatherers and the secret lives of deer and dogs. In this book, the capstone of her long career, Thomas, now 88, turns her keen eye to her own life. The result is an account of growing old that is at once funny and charming, intimate and profound - both a memoir and a life-affirming map all of us may follow to embrace our later years with grace and dignity.Growing Old explores a wide range of issues connected with ageing, from stereotypes of the elderly as burdensome to the methods of burial that humans have used throughout history to how to deal with a concerned neighbour who assumes you're buying cat food to eat for dinner. Written with wit and compassion, this book is an expansive and deeply personal paean to the beauty and the brevity of life that offers understanding for everyone, regardless of age.

And hanger can become a cycle. When we get too hungry, we're more likely to make food decisions we regret, which sets us up for another hanger crash later on. The good news: when we make better decisions about food, we think more clearly, connect better in our relationships, and improve our performance. Hanger Management is the book that can help you break this cycle and create healthy habits that fuel and empower you.In Hanger Management, New York Times bestselling author and clinical psychologist Susan Albers sheds light on the causes of hanger, and shares 45 of her best tips for managing it well. By learning to stay on top of your hunger cues, cultivating a better understanding of your appetite, and creating a better overall relationship with food, you'll become happier -- and healthier -- for life.

Happy Money: The Japanese Art of Making Peace with Your Money

by Ken Honda

Look around you - what do you see? You may discover to your surprise that the people who are most at peace with money are the ones who walk nimbly between having too little and having too much. They have found a balance between indulgence and austerity; between success and happiness; between motivation and inspiration; and between any number of other poles we tend to think of as either/or choices, but which in reality are simply posts on either side of a doorway through which we must pass. For many of us the subject of money is unavoidably stressful. Managing our personal finances is complicated, time consuming and often, particularly in the slow countdown to pay day, dispiriting. The good news is that in Japan - where a Zen approach to life is more widely practiced - a pathway to a better relationship with money is being carved, by Ken Honda. This beautifully written book will reinvent the way you see your personal finances. You will come to understand that money flows like water and arrives like a guest. You'll rethink your own attitudes and examine the way they were shaped by beliefs about money you were taught as a child. When we heal the fear and anxiety we have about money, we successfully achieve prosperity and peace. Take the zen path to financial security and happiness.

Happy Yes, Stressed No: The Easy Way to a Stress-Free Life, No Matter How Busy You Are

by Laurence Cohen

This book offers a unique philosophy that is a world away from traditional muscle-busting gyms or exercise classes that go for ‘the burn’. Our goals are easily summed up by two mottos: "unwind body and mind" and "empower body and mind". We believe that for most of us to get fit or stay fit – both mentally and physically – we don’t need to go to gyms or aerobics or dance classes. We're not saying don’t go to them – if you enjoy them that’s great. But most people who take the plunge and join do not enjoy them, and the drop-out rate is high. Health clubs make a lot of money from people who join, pay their signing up fees and their monthly subs, and don’t go. Madness. For the majority of us, ‘fit’ means keeping our body as flexible as possible, especially as we get older. We have reasonably strong muscles. We can breathe without gasping for breath when we carry out a little extra work. We know how to relax – properly. We can keep our stress under control. We are able to take a positive attitude towards our lives. And, finally, sensible but enjoyable eating. We will show you simple ways to achieve all of these objectives. What’s more, they will be easy to learn and action. You will enjoy them – honestly. And you will be able to incorporate them into your daily life – no matter how busy you might be.

Hearing Vocation Differently: Meaning, Purpose, and Identity in the Multi-Faith Academy

by David S. Cunningham

Many colleges and universities have begun using the language of vocation and calling to help undergraduates think about the future direction of their lives. This language is used in both secular and religious contexts, but it has deep roots in the Christian theological tradition. Given the increasingly multi-faith context of undergraduate life, many have asked whether this terminology can truly serve as a new vocabulary for higher education. If vocation is to find a foothold in the contemporary context, it will need to be re-examined, re-thought, and re-written; in short, higher education will need to undertake the project of hearing vocation differently. In this third volume on vocation from editor David S. Cunningham, the thirteen contributing scholars identify with a wide variety of religious traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism. Some contributors identify with more than one of these; others would claim none of them. The authors met on multiple occasions to read common texts, to discuss agreements and differences, and to respond to one another's writing; some of these responses are included at the end of each chapter. Both individually and collectively, these contributors expand the range of vocational reflection and discernment well beyond its traditional Christian origins. The authors observe that all undergraduate students--regardless of their academic field, religious background, or demographic identity-need to make space for reflection, to overcome obstacles to discernment, and to consider the significance of their own narratives, beliefs, and practices. This, in turn, will require college campuses to re-imagine their curricular and co-curricular programming in order to support their students's reflection on issues of meaning, purpose, and identity.
