Sustainable Business in the Arab Region: Corporate Social Responsibility vs Culture (Emerald Points)

by Randa Diab-Bahman

Existing research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) is written from a largely Westernized viewpoint, but what is the relationship between CSR, organizational – and wider – culture on the sustainability of businesses in the Arab region? Also, what impact do Islamic beliefs and values have on ethical business practices? Randa Diab-Bahman explores the understanding and expression of CSR in an Arab context; through a qualitative pilot study with prominent CSR experts (people with leading roles in CSR in the private, public and non-profit sector) in a predominately Islamic setting. Sustainable Business in the Arab Region confirms the importance of cultural elements in influencing the understanding and expression of CSR. Interestingly, the importance of the Islamic religion and specific aspects of its religious doctrine are found to be particularly important to understanding why CSR may be expressed differently in an Arab context. The implications of these findings are important for policymakers, as it can help them better align their CSR initiatives and better understand their possible impact on stakeholders. Not only relevant to those researching CSR across different organizational cultures, the findings here are important to anyone doing sustainable business globally.

Liberal Bullies: Inside the Mind of the Authoritarian Left

by Luke Conway

The political left has an urgent and rising problem with authoritarianism. An alarmingly high percentage of self-identified progressives are punitive, bullying, and intolerant of disagreement – and the problem is getting worse. Using his own cutting-edge research, leading psychologist Luke Conway shows that it's not just right-wing extremists who long for an authority figure to crush their enemies, silence opponents and restore order; it' s also those who preach 'be kind' and celebrate their 'inclusivity.' A persistent proportion of left-wingers demonstrate authoritarian tendencies, and they're becoming more emboldened as they gain cultural and political power. On a range of scientific and social issues, they are increasingly advocating censorship over free debate, disregarding the rule of law, and dehumanising their opponents. These tendencies are part of an accelerating 'threat circle' of mutual hatred and fear between left and right that could tear apart our basic democratic norms. Concluding with an eloquent call for firm but rational resistance to this rising tide of liberal bullying, Conway presents a way forward for our hyper-partisan era.

The Evolution of Authoritarianism and Contentious Action in Russia (Elements in Contentious Politics)

by null Bogdan Mamaev

This Element examines the evolution of authoritarianism in Russia from 2011 to 2023, focusing on its impact on contentious action. It argues that the primary determinant of contention, at both federal and regional levels, is authoritarian innovation characterized by reactive and proactive repression. Drawing on Russian legislation, reports from human rights organizations, media coverage, and a novel dataset of contentious events created from user-generated reports on Twitter using computational techniques, this Element contributes to the understanding of contentious politics in authoritarian regimes, underscoring the role of authoritarianism and its innovative responses in shaping contentious action.

Collective Empowerment in Latin America: Indigenous Peasant Movements and Political Transformation (Routledge Critical Development Studies)

by Gerardo Otero Efe Can Gürcan

This book develops a theory of collective empowerment that looks for change both from the bottom up, in civil society, and from the top down, from state interventions responding to such pressure.Reflecting on the advancement of Indigenous and peasant movements in Latin America since the neoliberal reformation of capitalism in the 1980s, the book outlines a path for progressive social action in which bottom-up pressure by social movements can help progressive parties to gain state power. The book considers how Indigenous and peasant movements in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico have tried to reshape crucial structures of society from the bottom up. While this mobilization from below is critical and necessary, the book argues that these movements must be supplemented by top-down change from progressive state interventions, as happened mostly in Bolivia and Brazil. The authors conclude that progressive societal action can have massive impact in transforming some of the main socioeconomic structures that determine humans’ relation to the extraction of natural resources, income and wealth inequality, and even the location of a nation’s insertion in world capitalism. This book will be an important resource for social-movement activists and for researchers working in political sociology, sociological theory, political studies, development studies, social movements, and Latin American Studies.

Die Effektivität von Online-Reviews in Hersteller-Online-Shops (Applied Marketing Science / Angewandte Marketingforschung)

by Katharina Elisabeth Kessing

Theory and Society: Selected Writings, Volume 3

by Zygmunt Bauman

The breadth and depth of Zygmunt Bauman’s engagement with social theory and the history of social thought has perhaps been underestimated, in part because many of his early writings were in Polish and never translated into English, and in part because many important pieces appeared in edited volumes and journals that are not readily available. This volume brings together hitherto unknown or rare pieces by Bauman on the theme of theory and society and also makes available previously unpublished material from the Bauman Archive at the University of Leeds. A consistent theme of Bauman’s work was his sustained engagement with humanism, and this provides a unifying thread in the pieces brought together in this volume. Here Bauman reflects on some of the core concepts of sociology, examines the work of a wide range of social theorists, from Durkheim and Gramsci to Agnes Heller and C. Wright Mills, and addresses an array of key ideas and issues including inequality, identity and social change. A substantial introduction by the editors provides readers with a lucid guide through this material and develops connections to Bauman’s other works. This is the third and final volume in a series of books that make available the lesser-known writings of one of the most influential social thinkers of our time. It will be of interest to students and scholars across the arts, humanities and social sciences, and to a wider readership.

Transformative Democracy in Educational Leadership and Policy: Social Justice in Practice (Transforming Education Through Critical Leadership, Policy and Practice)

by Lisa Fetman Linsay DeMartino

As we begin to reset in the modern era, we recognize the unfulfilled promises of democratic, socially just, and transformative educational leadership and policy. Over 100 years of such theories subsist in education scholarship, and yet policies and practices continue to reflect hegemonic values of neoliberalism, individualism, narcissism, and white-middle-class superiority. Transformative Democracy in Educational Leadership and Policy critiques education policies and practices that failed to deliver on their transformative promises, and explores more rigorous, nuanced transformative approaches within the context of the 2020s and beyond. How do we harness this potential to stimulate such a transformation in education? How do we push against neoliberal hegemony in education policy and practice, recognizing that we are now at a tipping point for transformative action? The authors address these inquiries, as we look toward a future filled with possibility and promise. This book culminates with suggestions for critical policy and leadership practice; suggestions include leadership planning as activism, decolonizing education systems, and critical instructional leadership, such as critical curriculum adoptions and transformative professional development opportunities.
