Diddly Squat: A Year on the Farm

by Jeremy Clarkson

Pull on your wellies, grab your flat cap and join Jeremy Clarkson in this hilarious and fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the farm we're all obsessed withWelcome to Clarkson's farm.An idyllic spot offering picturesque views across the Cotswolds, bustling hedgerows and natural springs, it's the perfect plot of land for someone to delegate the actual, you know, farming to someone else while he galivants around the world in cars.Until one day, Jeremy decided he would do the farming itself. After all, how hard could it be? . . .Faced with suffocating red tape, biblical weather, local objections, a global pandemic and his own frankly staggering ignorance of how to 'do farming', Jeremy soon realises that turning the farm around is going to take more than splashing out on a massive tractor.Fortunately, there's help at hand from a large and (mostly) willing team, including girlfriend Lisa, Kaleb the Tractor Driver, Cheerful Charlie, Ellen the Shepherd and Gerald, his Head of Security and Dry Stone Waller.Between them, they enthusiastically cultivate crops, rear livestock and hens, keep bees, bottle spring water and open a farm shop. But profits remain elusive. And yet while the farm may be called Diddly Squat for good reason, Jeremy soon begins to understand that it's worth a whole lot more to him than pounds, shillings and pence . . .Praise for Clarkson's Farm:'The best thing Clarkson's done . . . It pains me to say this' THE GUARDIAN'Shockingly hopeful' THE INDEPENDENT'Even the most committed Clarkson haters will find him likeable here' THE TELEGRAPH'Quite lovely' THE TIMES

Discrimination in Football (Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society)

by Christos Kassimeris

While football does not generate discriminatory behaviour, it often replicates the very same social issues that concern any given society. Evidently, football has witnessed an alarming increase in the number of disturbing incidents on the grounds of racism, ethnocentrism, sectarianism, homophobia, and sexism. Given the variety of forms that discrimination can take, it is imperative that football addresses with effect all such anti-social phenomena in order to continue to promote notions pertaining to social inclusion, equality, and cultural diversity – all central to the game’s philosophy and overall popularity. Assessing the nature and causes of discrimination in football is key to identifying the much-needed remedies, but also because discrimination poses a serious challenge to long-established practices deeply rooted in democracy. Discrimination in Football provides a comprehensive and in-depth investigation into these key issues affecting football today. This new book will appeal to academics and students with an interest in social science, law, sport, and humanities as well as football fans and professionals in the football industry.

Don Revie: The Biography

by Christopher Evans

The definitive story of Don Revie, a player and manager who singlehandedly changed the face of English football but left behind a legacy shrouded in allegations of corruption and dishonesty. Whenever the greatest managers the game has ever produced are mentioned, names like Busby, Shankly, Paisley and Ferguson trip off the tongue. Despite dominating the game in the late 1960s and 70s, there is clearly one name missing: Don Revie, the former Leeds United and England manager. Revie was one of the most complex and controversial men ever to grace the game of football. As a player he was crowned footballer of the year and credited with creating the modern centre-forward. As a manager, he took a Leeds United side languishing in the lower half of the second division and turned them into not only league champions, but one of the most dominant sides in the country. In 1974, as Sir Alf Ramsay ran out of time as England manager, it was to Revie that the Football Association turned. With England, Revie lost the magic touch he had had at Leeds, and became increasingly indecisive. Having failed to qualify for the European Championships in 1976 and on the brink of going out in the qualifying stages of the 1978 World Cup, Revie feared the sack. After negotiating a big money contract with United Arab Emirates Revie became the first man to walk out of the England job. Then came the backlash. Branded a traitor and banned from the game for 10 years, the press declared open season on Revie. Accused of offering bribes to throw matches, his reputation was destroyed. Shunned by the football establishment, when he died just 12 years after walking out on England, the FA did not even send a representative to his funeral. His death robbed him of the opportunity ever to rebuild his reputation as one of the most important figures ever seen in English football. The life and times of this multifaceted, enigmatic, pioneering football man, have still never been fully explored and explained in detail before. Based on exclusive interviews, this is the first biography to examine in depth the secrets of Revie's life. The book also reveals how today's football owes so much to Don Revie, in order to redeem the reputation of Don Revie for the first time, so that he can finally take his rightful place among the greats of the game.

Exhaustive, comprehensive and detailed’ – John Nicholson, author of Can We Have Our Football Back? With unparalleled behind-the-scenes access to academies at all levels, The Dream Factory takes a journey deep into the heart of youth football, revealing in gripping detail how home-grown Premier League stars such as Marcus Rashford and Trent Alexander-Arnold are created, and at what cost. Ryan Baldi introduces a rich array of characters behind talent production lines at several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City, zooming in on the stories of Alexander-Arnold’s unique development, how Rashford’s sense of social responsibility was nurtured, and how Phil Foden has become a beacon to City’s young hopefuls. The harsh realities of life away from the glamourous, big-budget academies are also examined. Learn how the methods that shaped Lionel Messi inform a third-tier club’s approach. Discover the ambitious non-league side aiming to become a local football and educational hub. Wander through Bury’s crumbling facilities in the final months before the club’s collapse and learn of the passion the staff poured into their efforts to develop the best young people, not just footballers, on meagre means. The Dream Factory provides the most intricate, intimate and all-encompassing insight yet into the machine that manufactures these stars, and everything it spits out in the process.

Dynamic Story Scripting With The Ink Scripting Language (PDF): Create Dialogue And Procedural Storytelling Systems For Unity Projects

by Daniel Cox

Bring your stories to life by combining the narrative scripting language, ink, with a plugin to build dialogue, quest, and procedural storytelling systems for Unity projects Key Features Learn how to translate stories into ink code to create interactive projects Gain valuable insight into the ink story API to create engaging stories using the Unity plugin Develop drop-in solutions to common narrative problems for Unity projects Book Description ink is a narrative scripting language designed for use with game engines such as Unity through a plugin that provides an application programming interface (API) to help you to move between the branches of a story and access the values within it. Hands-On Dynamic Story Scripting with the ink Scripting Language begins by showing you how ink understands stories and how to write some simple branching projects. You'll then move on to advanced usage with looping structures, discovering how to use variables to set up dynamic events in a story and defining simple rules to create complex narratives for use with larger Unity projects. As you advance, you'll learn how the Unity plugin allows access to a running story through its API and explore the ways in which this can be used to move data in and out of an ink story to adapt to different interactions and forms of user input. You'll also work with three specific use cases of ink with Unity by writing a dialogue system and creating quest structures and other branching narrative patterns. Finally, this will help you to find out how ink can be used to generate procedural storytelling patterns for Unity projects using different forms of data input. By the end of this book, you will be able to move from a simple story to an intricate Unity project using ink to power complex narrative structures. What you will learn Discover how ink understands stories and their parts Examine ink patterns for making branching narratives Develop code in Unity using the ink plugin to manipulate stories Design advanced projects combining ink stories with C# code Compare common use cases for ink and Unity, such as dialogue systems Determine how ink can best fit into future narrative projects Who this book is for This book is for Unity developers looking for a solution for narrative-driven projects and authors who want to create interactive story projects in Unity. The Dynamics of Modern Rugby

by Bruce Davies

The modern game of rugby football has become gladiatorial, whereby muscular athletic players are involved in a form of collision chess with sophisticated defences smothering the offensive skills that were at one time a more dominant feature of the game. The contributors to this book consider the physical, mental and nutritional demands of the game in its present form and how best to acquire these attributes in the most effective and efficient manner. The inevitable injuries that are associated with collision are considered in terms of prevention and the most effective forms of treatment. New concepts to improve exercise capacity, game preparation and recovery are discussed in conjunction with the modern coaching theories of the game. The possible changes to the rules are discussed by two outstanding International referees, and the future vision for World Rugby is outlined by the President of World Rugby. The Dynamics of Modern Rugby is both a unique and contemporary addition to the rugby literature and, as such, is essential reading for any student, researcher, coach, sports scientist, physiotherapist, nutritionist or clinician with an interest in rugby.

Elbow Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment

by Joshua S. Dines Christopher L. Camp David W. Altchek

Now in a fully revised and expanded second edition, this practical text presents the current state of the art and latest advancements in the biomechanics, assessment, diagnosis and management of UCL injury in the elbow. In the years since this book’s initial publication, significant developments have occurred on multiple fronts relating to elbow UCL injury, including injury prevention, less invasive repair techniques, more anatomical surgical reconstructions, and improved post-injury rehabilitation protocols. Chapters are once again arranged thematically, beginning with discussion of the relevant anatomy and surgical approaches, throwing biomechanics and overload mechanisms, epidemiology, history and physical exam. After a description of the radiological approaches to assessment, both conservative and surgical strategies are outlined and discussed in detail, from repair both with and without augmentation to reconstruction both arthroscopically and with newer minimally invasive techniques. Considerations for UCL injury in special populations – the young athlete and the female athlete – and sports-specific rehabilitation, return-to-play and prevention via wearable technology round out this thorough presentation. Enhanced with select video clips illustrating surgical techniques, Elbow Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury, Second Edition remains a go-to resource for orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, therapists and trainers who work with athletes that suffer from these conditions.

Emerging Sports as Social Movements: Disc Golf and the Rise of an Unknown Sport

by Joshua Woods

This volume examines the rise of an emerging sport as a grassroots effort (or “new social movement”), arguing that the growth of non-normative sports movements occurs through two social processes: one driven primarily by product development, commercialization, and consumption, and another that relies upon public resources and grassroots efforts. Through the lens of disc golf, informed by the author’s experience both playing and researching the sport, Joshua Woods here explores how non-normative sports development depends on the consistency of insider culture and ideology, as well as on how the movement navigates a broad field of market competition, government regulation, community characteristics, public opinion, traditional media, social media and technological change. Throughout, the author probes why some sports grow faster than others, examining cultural tendencies toward sport, individual choices to participate, and the various institutional forces at play.

End to End: The Land's End to John o'Groats Cycling Record: A Year of Obsession, Hallucination and Happiness

by Paul Jones

The End to End record is the longest place-to-place cycling record in Britain. It is a daunting 842 miles and for the men and women who attempt to break the record, there can be no second place, only the binary outcome of total success or failure. Paul Jones decided to ride from Land's End to John O' Groats in an attempt to understand the relentless physical and mental challenges involved. End to End is a captivating and beautifully written narrative. A lyrical account of the journey sits alongside meetings with amazing cyclists; people like Eileen Sheridan; who covered the distance in under three days in 1954, or current men's record holder Michael Broadwith who did it in a scarcely believable 43 hours. Paul Jones reaches further back to the very first attempts in the 1880s, undertaken on penny farthings, fuelled by Victorian values and patent medicine. For the author, what starts as a simple way to frame the narrative transforms into a deeper search for meaning amidst the ceaseless clamour of life, work and relationships. It becomes a trip through the contours of the mind as well as the map, from Bodmin Moor to Shap Fell, the Cairngorms and the Caithness coast. End to End is a portrayal of hope and ambition, of what happens when things go wrong and how hard it is to make them right. It is about courage, obsession and joy, but above all else, it is a compelling exploration of why journeys matter for all of us.

Everything harder than everyone else: Why some of us push our bodies to extremes

by Jenny Valentish

There is a part of human nature compelled to test our own limits. But what happens when this part comes to define us? When journalist Jenny Valentish wrote Woman of Substances, a book about addiction, she noticed that people who treated drug-taking like an Olympic sport would often hurl themselves into a pursuit like marathon running upon giving up. What stayed constant was the need to push their boundaries. Everything Harder Than Everyone Else follows people doing the things that most couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t. By delving into their extreme behaviour, there’s a lot that us mere mortals can learn about the human condition. There’s the neuroscientist violating his brain to override his disgust response. The athlete using childhood adversity as grist for the mill. The wrestler turning restlessness into curated ultraviolence. The architect hanging from hooks in her flesh, to better get out of her head. The performance artist seeking erasure by torturing his body. The BDSM dom helping people flirt with death to feel more alive. The bare-knuckle boxer whose gnarliest opponent is her ego. The dancer who could not separate her identity from her practice until at death’s door. The bodybuilder exacting order on a life that was once chaotic. And the porn star-turned-fighter for whom sex and violence are two sides of the same coin. Their insights lead Jenny on a compulsive, sometimes reckless journey of immersion journalism.
