Disability Law And Policy: An Analysis Of The Un Convention

by Charles O'Mahony Gerard Quinn

Disability Law and Policy: An Analysis of the UN Convention undertakes a multidisciplinary examination of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The rights-based perspective on disability is a relatively new lens through which disability law and policy is considered. This is despite the fact that persons with disabilities are often described as the world's largest minority. There are approximately 1 billion persons with disabilities in the world (15% of the world's population). This book is an edited volume of essays that undertakes a multidisciplinary examination of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Part 1 focuses on disability and intersectionality. Part 2 addresses the on-going debate about the meaning of Article 12, the right to equal recognition before the law. The chapters contained in Part 3 address the emerging discourse on the right to liberty as contained in Article 14 of the CRPD and the barriers facing persons with mental health problems. Part 4 of this collection examines the right to live independently and to be included in the community. The themes of the right to inclusive education and employment for persons with disabilities are explored in Parts 5 and 6 of the collection. Finally, Part 7 examines how the CRPD is being implemented regionally and in a number of jurisdictions. [Subject: Human Rights Law, Disability Law]

Better Learning, Better Behaviour (Policy And Practice In Education Ser. (PDF) #18)

by George Head

George Head explores the issues surrounding young people experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) and suggests teaching strategies that, in targeting such children work to the benefit of all at school. Furthermore, the book argues that, within a context of inclusion, provision for pupils regarded as belonging to the category requires to be refocused onto their learning rather than their behaviour. The focus of educational policy has become increasingly rights based and conflicts arise from, for example, the right of children with SEBD to be taught alongside their peers as against the right of the majority of pupils to learn without the disruption caused by inappropriate behaviour. Through a critical examination of theories of behaviour and learning, recent policy and research, the book argues that traditional approaches that focus on young people’s behaviour have been inadequate and have led to the marginalisation of children and their teachers. These traditional approaches have led to the construction of pupil and teacher identities that are based on personal and professional deficit thus reinforcing views that segregated provision is the most appropriate educational context for this group. Instead, the author argues that a shift in practice that is posited on optimistic theories of behaviour and adopts a focus on learning rather than behaviour will help create the identities of effective learner and teacher that will enhance the educational experience of all young learners in schools. Intended as a textbook for student teachers and a reference for those involved in teaching young people with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties this analysis will appeal wherever schools grapple with these problems Dr George Head is a senior lecturer in the Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow.

Inclusion in Schools: Making a Difference

by Rosemary Sage

By 1987 Swaggart was one of the most popular video preachers in the world, with a weekly television audience of 2.1 million in the US and a worldwide audience of millions more in 143 countries. But then, in a cheerless motel west of New Orleans, Jimmy's life and ministry took a calamitous turn. This the tale of the rise of two intimately linked colossi of the American century: Pentecostalism, the fastest growing religious movement in the world, and its "evil twin", Rock 'n' Roll. A major theme of the book is how the religious ecstasy of Pentecostalism - the rousing music, the speaking in tongues, the reception of the Spirit - combined with its severe sexual repression leads to the kind of furtive acting out that brought down not only Jimmy Swaggart but also other evangelists. It is the story, too, of the rapid rise of the Religious Right, with its competing personalities and ideologies. In the end, the author sees Jimmy as a victim - like many others - of a primitive faith colliding with the forces of the late 20th century fame.

Assessing the Needs of Bilingual Pupils: Living in Two Languages

by Deryn Hall Dominic Griffiths Liz Haslam Yvonne Wilkin

Ever since its publication in 1995, this book has offered a means for teachers to consider why some bilingual pupils in their classrooms are not making learning progress or are academically underachieving. This new second edition has been revised and updated in the light of the new government legislation and guidance, most significantly the revised Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs. It continues to look at ways of asking questions about the pupil, of collecting evidence of both learning and language development and of offering support within the classroom. It contains a model and photocopiable proformas for use within schools, which should help to establish clear systems of identification of those bilingual pupils who may have special learning needs and to distinguish these from the need for language support.
