The Zohar: Reception and Impact (The Littman Library of Jewish Civilization)

National Jewish Book Awards Finalist for the Nahum N. Many scholarly works have been dedicated to its mystical content, its literary style, and the question of its authorship. He therefore considers not only the attribution of different qualities to the Zohar through time but also the people who were engaged in attributing such qualities and the social and cultural functions associated with their creation, re-creation, and rejection. For each historical period from the beginning of Zohar scholarship to the present, Huss considers the social conditions that stimulated the veneration of the Zohar as well as the factors that contributed to its rejection, alongside the cultural functions and consequences of each approach. Zizek and the Rhetorical Unconscious: Global Politics, Philosophy, and Subjectivity

This book builds on a critique of Slavoj Zizek’s work to outline a new theory of psychoanalytic rhetoric. Der Band ist anläßlich des 100. Geburtstag des Soziologen Norbert Elias entstanden. Er enthält Beiträge, die sich ergänzend, kritisch oder vergleichend mit Leben und Werk von Elias beschäftigen. Aufgrund der späten "Entdeckung" von Norbert Elias Ende der 60er Jahre mußte zunächst sein Werk gesichtet und gesichert werden. Diese erste Phase der Rezeption dauert an, wie die Neuausgabe des Zivilisationsbuches dokumentiert. Mittlerweile hat jedoch die zweite Phase der Rezeption eingesetzt. Sie ist durch Bilanzierungen, kritische Aufarbeitungen und Weiterentwicklungen gekennzeichnet. Das Buch umfaßt neue Aspekte der Eliasschen Biographie, grundsätzliche Probleme der "Architektur" seiner Theorie, Vergleiche mit anderen Theoretikern, und es gibt den Forschungsstand zu klassischen wie aktuellen Anwendungsbereichen der Zivilisationstheorie wieder.

Ina Alber untersucht anhand des empirischen Beispiels von Zivilgesellschafts-Aktivistinnen und -Aktivisten im postsozialistischen Polen, auf welche Weise ein so unterschiedlich konnotiertes Konzept wie Zivilgesellschaft immer wieder diskursiv von unterschiedlichen Akteurinnen und Akteuren hergestellt wird. Zwischen Erinnerungen an die Solidarność und Finanzierung durch externe demokratiefördernde Organisationen engagieren sie sich für Menschenrechte, Freiheit und Frieden. Anhand einer Triangulation von wissenssoziologischer Diskurs- und Biographieanalyse werden der Wandel des Deutungsmusters sowie Typen zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements diskutiert.

Zivilgesellschaftliche Performanz von religiösen und säkularen Migrantenselbstorganisationen: Eine Studie in Nordrhein-Westfalen

Das vorliegende Open-Access-Buch trägt in theoretischer und empirischer Hinsicht zu einem besseren Verständnis der Eigenschaften und zivilgesellschaftlichen Verortung von religiösen und säkularen Migrantenselbstorganisationen (MSO) bei. MSO werden unter migrations-, religions- sowie organisationssoziologischen Blickwinkeln betrachtet, in politische Felder und Diskurse eingeordnet und die jeweiligen Positionen mit den Ergebnissen einer (nicht-repräsentativen) Befragung von MSO in neun Großstädten Nordrhein-Westfalens ins Verhältnis gesetzt. Bei der Erhebung wurden organisationsspezifische Merkmale, Ressourcenausstattungen und zivilgesellschaftliche Eigenschaften in den Blick genommen, die wiederum Aktivitäten, Ziele, Selbstverständnisse, das Kooperationsspektrum sowie die Umweltbeziehungen der MSO umfassen. Insgesamt unterstreichen die Ergebnisse für die beiden unterschiedenen Organisationstypen viele Gemeinsamkeiten, zugleich aber auch spezifische Binnen- und Außenverhältnisse. Eine Reduzierung ausschließlich auf religiöse oder säkulare Merkmale wird ihrer Charakterisierung also nicht gerecht – vielmehr ist von einer Vermischung von Handlungslogiken auszugehen.

Zivilgesellschaft und Wohlfahrtsstaat im Wandel: Akteure, Strategien und Politikfelder (Bürgergesellschaft und Demokratie)

Anliegen dieser Einführung ist es, Bedeutung und Funktion zivilgesellschaftlicher Organisationen im Wohlfahrtsstaat zu thematisieren und einen Eindruck von dem sich wandelnden Verhältnis von Wohlfahrtsstaat und Zivilgesellschaft in Deutschland zu vermitteln. Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen der Frage nach, welche Rolle den Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs) in der Konzeption der internationalen Zivilgesellschaft zugeschrieben wird und wie sich die NGOs den Herausforderungen explizit und implizit stellen. In den vier Kapiteln kommen Wissenschaftler, Experten, aber auch NGO-Aktive zu Wort. Kapitel I beschäftigt sich mit der theoretischen Dimension der ,NGOs in der Zivilgesellschaft', Kapitel II widmet sich den ,Zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen konkret'.
