Assisted Reproduction in Wild Mammals of South America
South America has one of the greatest riches in the world in terms of biodiversity. Despite all this richness, recent reports warn of different threats to this biodiversity. As a strategy to reduce the rate of loss of animal species, the development and application of assisted reproduction techniques (ARTs) for their conservation currently stands out. Thus, this book compiles information on recent scientific studies regarding the development of ARTs for the conservation of wild mammalian species in South America, thus serving as an important source of reference for professionals and students interested in wildlife conservation.
Assumptions Inhibiting Progress in Comparative Biology
by Brian I. Crother & Lynne R. ParentiThis book is a thought-provoking assessment of assumptions inhibiting progress in comparative biology. The volume is inspired by a list generated years earlier by Donn Rosen, one of the most influential, innovative and productive comparative biologists of the latter 20th century. His list has assumed almost legendary status among comparative evolutionary biologists. Surprisingly many of the obstructing assumptions implicated by Rosen remain relevant today. Any comparative biologist hoping to avoid such assumptions in their own research will benefit from this introspective volume.

Asthma Treatment: A Multidisciplinary Approach (Nato Science Series A: #229)
by D. Olivieri P. J. Barnes S. S. Hurd Giancarlo C. FolcoFrom the 19-29 May 1991 the NATO ASI Course PAsthma Treatment: A P Multidisciplinary Approach was held in Erice, on the rocky North West Coast of Sicily, facing the ancient Phoenician shore of the African Continent. Sixty NATO sponsored participants arriving from many different European Countries - Nato members and non - attended the course. Qualified researchers from Europe and the United States held extensive lectures, short meetings and small informal group discussions. Erice is a magical place which draws together people from different backgrounds and cultures under her Mediterrean charm, recreating the ancient Greek openair discussion atmosphere. And so, during the 10 days gathering, the extensive willingness of the senior investigators and the laudable enthusiasm of the younger participants was stimulated. All of the most recent findings in the biology and the pharmacology of Asthma were discussed, initially behind closed doors, to be unhurriedly continued along the alley ways of the "Cittadella della Scienza" , in Erice's small restaurants, and on her deserted beaches. The texts collected here are testimony to the high quality of the investigators contributions as well as their far reaching interests. I think that a Director of such a Course would be adequatly satisfied by merely considering the enthusiasm and high level involvement of every participant. He could not have been more satisfied after having considered the proceedings summerizing the scientific content of the meeting.
Astrobiological Neurosystems: Rise and Fall of Intelligent Life Forms in the Universe (Astronomers' Universe)
by Jerry L. CranfordThis book explains why scientists believe that life may be more common in the Universe than previously considered possible. It presents the tools and strategies astronomers and astrobiologists are using in their formal search for habitable exoplanets as well as more advanced forms of life in other parts of our galaxy. The author then summarizes what is currently known about how and where organic molecules critical to our form of carbon-based life are manufactured. The core of the book explains (and presents educated guesses) how nervous systems evolved on Earth, how they work, and how they might work on other worlds. Combining his knowledge of neuroscience, computers, and astrobiology the author jumps into the discussion whether biological nervous systems are just the first step in the rise of intelligence in the Universe. The book ends with a description from both the psychologist’s and the neuroscientist’s viewpoints, exactly what it is about the fields of astrobiology and astronomy that “boggles the minds” of many amateur astronomers and interested non-scientists.This book stands out from other popular science books on astrobiology by making the point that “astro-neurobiologists” need to begin thinking about how alien nervous systems might work.
Astrochimp
by null David WalliamsFrom million-copy bestselling author David Walliams comes a laugh-out-loud animal space adventure. Chump the chimpanzee was always being silly. He would: - make rude noises from BOTH ENDS… - pick his nose with his little toe… - eat the skins of bananas, hurling out the tasty part inside. NASA’s scientists thought he’d be the PERFECT chimp to send into space. Little did Chump know that he had been selected for a deadly-dangerous mission. If a chimp could orbit Earth, then chances were a human could too. With Chump the chimp at the controls of a spacecraft, what could possibly go wrong? As it turned out, EVERYTHING. Blast off with Chump, and encounter dog space pirates, evil insects, and the silliest chimpanzee who ever lived in this wildly funny space opera, fully illustrated in fantastic colour. David Walliams was most recently Children’s number one bestseller with The Blunders TCM Chart, 14 October 2023).
Astrocytes in (Patho)Physiology of the Nervous System
by Vladimir Parpura Philip G. HaydonAstrocytes were the original neuroglia that Ramón y Cajal visualized in 1913 using a gold sublimate stain. This stain targeted intermediate filaments that we now know consist mainly of glial fibrillary acidic protein, a protein used today as an astrocytic marker. Cajal described the morphological diversity of these cells with some ast- cytes surrounding neurons, while the others are intimately associated with vasculature. We start the book by discussing the heterogeneity of astrocytes using contemporary tools and by calling into question the assumption by classical neuroscience that neurons and glia are derived from distinct pools of progenitor cells. Astrocytes have long been neglected as active participants in intercellular communication and information processing in the central nervous system, in part due to their lack of electrical excitability. The follow up chapters review the “nuts and bolts” of ast- cytic physiology; astrocytes possess a diverse assortment of ion channels, neu- transmitter receptors, and transport mechanisms that enable the astrocytes to respond to many of the same signals that act on neurons. Since astrocytes can detect chemical transmitters that are released from neurons and can release their own extracellular signals there is an increasing awareness that they play physiological roles in regulating neuronal activity and synaptic transmission. In addition to these physiological roles, it is becoming increasingly recognized that astrocytes play critical roles during pathophysiological states of the nervous system; these states include gliomas, Alexander disease, and epilepsy to mention a few.
