Zoological Physics: Quantitative Models of Body Design, Actions, and Physical Limitations of Animals

by Boye K. Ahlborn

This book presents a physicists view of life. The primary life functions of animals, such as eating, growing, reproducing and getting around all depend on motion: Motion of materials through the body, motion of limbs and motion of the entire body through water, air and on land. These activities are driven by internal information stored in the genes or in the brain and by external information transmitted by the senses. This book models these life functions with the tools of physics. It will appeal to all scientists, from the undergraduate level upwards, who are interested in the role played by physics in the animal kingdom.

The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy: What Animals on Earth Reveal about Aliens – and Ourselves

by Arik Kershenbaum

DISCOVER HOW LIFE REALLY WORKS - ON EARTH AND IN SPACEWe are unprepared for the greatest discovery of modern science - aliens. Scientists are confident that there is life across the universe, yet we have not moved beyond Hollywood stereotypes. The time has come to abandon our fixation on alien monsters and to look at the science.Using his expert understanding of life on Earth and Darwin's theory of evolution Cambridge zoologist Dr Arik Kershenbaum explains what alien life must be like: how these creatures will move, socialise and communicate.Might there be an alien planet with supersonic animals? Will aliens scream with fear, act honestly or have technology? Is the universe swarming with robots? Dr Kershenbaum uses cutting-edge science to paint an entertaining and compelling picture of extra-terrestrial life. These are aliens - but not as you know them.

Zoonoses - Infections Affecting Humans and Animals: Focus on Public Health Aspects

by Andreas Sing

The book will cover the most important zoonoses with a public health impact and debate actual developments in this field from a One Health perspective. The outline of the book follows a “setting” approach, i.e. special settings of zoonoses with a public health aspect, rather than presenting a simple textbook of an encyclopedic character. Main chapters will deal with zoonoses in the food chain including a special focus on the emerging issue of antibiotic resistance, with zoonoses in domestic and pet animals, in wildlife animal species (including bats as an important infectious agent multiplier), influenza and tuberculosis as most prominent zoonoses, and zoonotic pathogens as bioterroristic agents. Special interest chapters debate non-resolved and currently hotly debated zoonoses (e.g. M. Crohn/paratuberculosis, chronic botulism) as well as the economic and ecological aspects of zoonoses.

by F. Canavesi

Zooplankton Ecology

by M. Alexandra Teodósio and Ana B. Barbosa

This book aims at providing students and researchers an advanced integrative overview on zooplankton ecology, covering marine and freshwater organisms, from microscopic phagotrophic protists, to macro-jellyfishes and active fish larvae. The first book section addresses zooplanktonic organisms and processes, the second section is devoted to zooplankton spatial and temporal distribution patterns and trophic dynamics, and the final section is dedicated to emergent methodological approaches (e.g., omics). Book chapters include comprehensive synthesis, observational and manipulative studies, and sediment-based analysis, a vibrant imprint of benthic-pelagic coupling and ecosystem connectivity. Most chapters also address the impacts of anticipated environmental changes (e.g., warming, acidification).

Zoos: A Philosophical Tour

by K. Lee

In this book, Keekok Lee asks the question, 'what is an animal, and how does our treatment of it within captivity affect its status as a being ?' This ontological treatment marks the first such approach in looking at animals in captivity. Engaging with the moral questions of zoo-keeping (is it morally justified to keep a wild animal in captivity?) as well as the ontological (what is it that we conserve in zoos after all? A wild animal or its shadow?), Lee develops her own original hypothesis, centred around the concept of 'immuration' - defining this in contrast to domestication - and thereby provides a unique addition to the growing body of work on animal ethics.

Zum Umgang mit aquatischen Organismen: Versuchstierkundliche Grundlagen

by Beate Adam Maren Schürmann Ulrich Schwevers
