Approaching Business Models from an Economic Perspective (SpringerBriefs in Business)

by Wei Wei Wuxiang Zhu Guiping Lin

Approaching Business Models from an Economic Perspective examines business model logic and explores the model from different aspects including definition, design, functionality, elements, and self-sustaining logic. It explains the essence and core elements of a business model and unlocks its mysteries, helping transform business model practices into an expedient set of theories that in turn facilitate application in real scenarios. The book explores the logic behind the six major elements and enables entrepreneurs to study and implement business model theory and make decisions confidently based on a compelling logic. Moreover, it demonstrates through an array of convincing examples that a transaction structure and its six elements follow the principles of increasing transaction value, reducing transaction costs, and mitigating transaction risks.

Approaching Business Models from an Economic Perspective II

by Wei Wei Wuxiang Zhu Guiping Lin

This book breaks the boundaries of the single enterprise, proposing the symbiotic business model, and discussing business model design engineering as well as other new concepts, methods and ideas. Business models are not only dependent on business intuition, but also on systematic design and continuous upgrade. This book presents qualitative methods, such as the theory and principles of business model design; quantitative methods, for example the business-model based "Accounting Method"; and the "Financial Analysis Method," based on the business ecosystem. These methods help entrepreneurs and managers design better business models to further develop enterprises and make them more successful.

Approaching Consumer Culture

by Evgenia Krasteva-Blagoeva

This fascinating collection analyzes the impact of Western consumer culture on local cultures and consumption in Southeast Europe and East Asia. Cultural, historical, economic and sociopolitical contexts are examined regarding buying behaviors, usage and customization practices and consumer activism, specifically in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania as cultures continue to evolve in the post-socialist era, and in China and Japan as a continuation of movements toward modernity and progress. Surprising and thought-provoking contrasts stand out as consumers balance the global with the local in terms of clothing, technology, luxury items, and food. All chapters feature a wealth of empirical and cross-cultural data, and the presentation is framed by Professor Mike Featherstone’s theoretical essay on the origins of consumer culture and the consequences of two hundred years of increasing consumption for the human condition and the future of the planet.Included in the coverage:“You are a socialist child like me”: Goods and Identity in BulgariaConsumer Culture from Socialist Yugoslavia to Post-Socialist Serbia: Movements and MomentsPreserves Exiting Socialism: Authenticity, Anti-Standardization, and Middle-Class Consumption in Post-Socialist RomaniaModernization and the Department Store in Early 20th-Century Japan: Modern Girl and New Consumer Culture LifestylesA Cultural Reading of Conspicuous Consumption in ChinaApproaching Consumer Culture broadens the cultural anthropology literature and will be welcomed by Western and Eastern scholars and researchers alike. Its depth and accessibility make it useful to university courses in cultural anthropology, cultural studies, and sociology.

Approaching Transnationalisms: Studies on Transnational Societies, Multicultural Contacts, and Imaginings of Home

by Brenda S. A. Yeoh Michael W. Charney

The term 'transnationalism' has gained considerable academic and popular currency despite a lack of clear definitions, in part because its overall form changes as its influence incorporates additional spheres of daily life on a variety of scales and contexts. The purpose of this volume is to bring together different perspectives on this phenomenon, using case studies that represent some of the most current thinking on 'transnationalism' in a wide range of disciplines. Central themes which this book explores include legal and economic reactions to transnational migration; the (re)negotiation of identities in the context of changing national, social and cultural identities; and the emergence of new imaginings of home and social space in transnational communities. Approaching Transnationalisms: Studies on Transnational Societies, Multicultural Contacts and Imaginings of Home foregrounds powerful transnational forces crossing the boundaries of nation-states, and at the same time, gives attention to the continued significance of the nation-state and the diversity of localized reactions to transnational challenges.

The Appropriation of Ecological Space: Agrofuels, unequal exchange and environmental load displacements (Routledge Studies in Ecological Economics)

by Kenneth Hermele

Although it is recognised that Thomas Robert Malthus was wrong when he posited a contradiction between population increase and agricultural growth, there are increasing signs that he could be proved right in the future. Perhaps Malthus was too late and too early in his prediction? He was too late, because he did not foresee the shift from land-based resources to fossil fuels, outing an end to the limits of agricultural growth, at least temporarily; and he was too early to witness that fossil fuels would come up against their own limits in terms of supply as well as in terms of global warming. This study deals with land-based resources and the role they play in the global socio-ecological metabolic regime, both now and in the future. In particular, the controversial use of agrofuels as a solution to coming scarcity is subjected to close scrutiny.

Approval Voting

by Steven Brams Peter C. Fishburn

This book presents a simple and logical potential electoral reform. Under this system, voters may vote for, or approve of, as many candidates as they like in multicandidate elections. Among the many benefits of approval voting are its propensity to elect the majority candidate, its relative invulnerability to insincere or strategic voting, and a probable increase in voter turnout.

Approximate Behavior of Tandem Queues (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems #171)

by G.F. Newell

The following monograph deals with the approximate stochastic behavior of a system consisting of a sequence of servers in series with finite storage between consecutive servers. The methods employ deterministic queueing and diffusion approximations which are valid under conditions in which the storages and the queue lengths are typically large compared with 1. One can disregard the fact that the customer counts must be integer valued and treat the queue as if it were a (stochastic) continuous fluid. In these approximations, it is not necessary to describe the detailed probability distribution of service times; it suffices simply to specify the rate of service and the variance rate (the variance of the number served per unit time). Specifically, customers are considered to originate from an infinite reservoir. They first pass through a server with service rate ~O' vari ance rate ~O' into a storage of finite capacity c . They then pass l through a server with service rate ~l' variance rate ~l' into a storage of capacity c ' etc., until finally, after passing through an nth server, 2 they go into an infinite reservoir (disappear). If any jth storage become , n , the service at the j-lth server is interrupted full j = 1, 2, and, of course, if a jth storage becomes empty the jth server is inter rupted; otherwise, services work at their maximum rate.

Approximate Dynamic Programming for Dynamic Vehicle Routing (Operations Research/Computer Science Interfaces Series #61)

by Marlin Wolf Ulmer

This book provides a straightforward overview for every researcher interested in stochastic dynamic vehicle routing problems (SDVRPs). The book is written for both the applied researcher looking for suitable solution approaches for particular problems as well as for the theoretical researcher looking for effective and efficient methods of stochastic dynamic optimization and approximate dynamic programming (ADP). To this end, the book contains two parts. In the first part, the general methodology required for modeling and approaching SDVRPs is presented. It presents adapted and new, general anticipatory methods of ADP tailored to the needs of dynamic vehicle routing. Since stochastic dynamic optimization is often complex and may not always be intuitive on first glance, the author accompanies the ADP-methodology with illustrative examples from the field of SDVRPs.The second part of this book then depicts the application of the theory to a specific SDVRP. The process starts from the real-world application. The author describes a SDVRP with stochastic customer requests often addressed in the literature, and then shows in detail how this problem can be modeled as a Markov decision process and presents several anticipatory solution approaches based on ADP. In an extensive computational study, he shows the advantages of the presented approaches compared to conventional heuristics. To allow deep insights in the functionality of ADP, he presents a comprehensive analysis of the ADP approaches.

Approximate Stochastic Behavior of n-Server Service Systems with Large n (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems #87)

by G. F. Newell

For many stochastic service systems, service capacities large enough to serve some given customer demand is achieved simply by providing multiple servers of low capacity; for example, toll plazas have many toll collectors, banks have many t- lers, bus lines have many buses, etc. If queueing exists and the typical queue size is large compared with the number n of servers, all servers are kept busy most of the time and the service behaves like some "effective" single server wit:l mean se.- vice time lin times that of an actual server. The behavior of the queueing system can be described, at least approximately, by use of known results from the much studied single-channel queueing system. For n» 1 , however, (we are thinking p- ticularlyof cases in which n ~ 10), the system may be rather congested and quite sensitive to variations in demand even when the average queue is small compared with n. The behavior of such a system will, generally, differ quite significantly from any "equivalent" single-server system. The following study deals with what, in the customary classification of queueing systems, is called the G/G/n system; n servers in parallel with independent s- vice times serving a fairly general type of customer arrival process. rhe arrival rate of customers may be time-dependent; particular attention is given to time - pendence typical of a "rush hour" in which the arrival rate has a single maximum possibly exceeding the capacity of the service.
