The Mid-Career Success Guide: Planning for the Second Half of Your Working Life

by Sally J. Power

Most people realize that the employment deal has changed: the days of lifetime employment, or even a clear trajectory up the corporate ladder, are long gone. Dozens of surveys merely quantify what we all know—that education, hard work, and loyalty are no longer enough to guarantee job security. People in mid-career today want to take greater control of their working lives for many reasons. But they are not sure of how to do that in a working world full of change, uncertainty, disappearing career paths, downsizings, and early retirement packages. In The Mid-Career Success Guide, Sally Power draws from her research in management and career development to explain the sources and implications of these trends, and provide solutions to the challenges they present. The book introduces the Employability Plus model, an approach to career management that leaves behind the traditional job- or organization-centric perspectives by focusing on the individual's work, as a portfolio of skills that can be shaped to their interests and to their employers' needs and desires. Moreover, Power explores how individuals can make the time to develop new skills and knowledge, even when they are employed full-time, in order to expand the array of options available. Featuring real-life examples, interactive exercises, and an appendix of research tools and methods, The Mid-Career Success Guide offers fresh strategies and tactics for overcoming job stress and uncertainty, and proactively managing your career in midlife and beyond. In addition, it will serve as an essential resource for managers, human resource and career counseling professionals, and professors and students of organizational behavior and workplace trends.

Mid-Course Correction Revisited: The Story and Legacy of a Radical Industrialist and his Quest for Authentic Change

by Ray Anderson John A. Lanier

The original Mid-Course Correction, published 20 years ago, became a classic in the sustainability field. It put forth a new vision for what its author, Ray C. Anderson, called the “prototypical company of the 21st century”—a restorative company that does no harm to society or the environment. In it Anderson recounts his eureka moment as founder and leader of Interface, Inc., one of the world’s largest carpet and flooring companies, and one that was doing business in all the usual ways. Bit by bit, he began learning how much environmental destruction companies like his had caused, prompting him to make a radical change. Mid-Course Correction not only outlined what eco-centered leadership looks like, it also mapped out a specific set of goals for Anderson’s company to eliminate its environmental footprint. Those goals remain visionary even today, and this second edition delves into how Interface worked toward making them a reality, birthing one of the most innovative and successful corporate sustainability efforts in the world. The new edition also explores why we need to create not only prototypical companies, but also the prototypical economy of the twenty-first century. As our global economy shifts toward sustainability, challenges like building the circular economy and reversing global warming present tremendous opportunities for business and industry. Mid-Course Correction Revisted contains a new foreword by Paul Hawken, several new chapters by Ray C. Anderson Foundation executive director John A. Lanier, and interviews with Janine Benyus, Joel Makower, Andrew Winston, Ellen MacArthur and other leaders in green enterprise, the circular economy, and biomimicry. A wide range of business readers—from sustainability professionals to green entrepreneurs to CEOs—will find both wise advice and concrete examples in this new look at a master in corporate and environmental leadership, and the legacy he left.

Mid-sized Manufacturing Companies: The New Driver of Italian Competitiveness (SxI - Springer for Innovation / SxI - Springer per l'Innovazione)

by Fulvio Coltorti, Riccardo Resciniti, Annalisa Tunisini and Riccardo Varaldo

The structure of Italian industry is characterized by a predominance of small sized companies and the presence of very few large companies. For a long time a conviction was shared among scholars and practitioners that the strength and safety of Italian industry were based on its industrial districts, that is, the system of interdependent and co-localized small companies which derive their competitive force from an effective and efficient division of labour. This book stresses the idea that a new, vital and promising phenomenon for the competitiveness of Italian industry is focused on mid-sized companies, and the systems of interconnected firms that form a constituent part of their business model. These companies, which originate largely from districts and other local production systems, are a strong entrepreneurial force complementing the districts that have characterized Italy and made Italian industry famous worldwide. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of these firms is provided in this book. Business models and strategies implemented by a number of successful Italian mid-sized manufacturing companies are also explored. Consequences in terms of management and industrial policies are provided. A final look at the German Mittelstand gives a useful comparison.

MIDAS Technical Analysis: A VWAP Approach to Trading and Investing in Today's Markets (Bloomberg Financial #46)

by Andrew Coles David Hawkins

The authors show how to employ MIDAS in trading, from recognizing set ups to identifying price targets. The book explains the basics of MIDAS before demonstrating how to apply it in different time frames. Further, it extrapolates how MIDAS can be used with other more conventional indicators, such as DeMark or moving averages. In addition to introducing new indicators that the authors have created, the book also supplies new computer codes.

Midcourse Correction for the College Classroom: Putting Small Group Instructional Diagnosis to Work

by Carol A. Hurney Christine M. Rener Jordan D. Troisi

This book is about using the Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) method to make improvements to the educational experience midcourse. The idea is to use this structured interview process to involve students in helping faculty improve a course while they are in it, potentially making a difference for themselves as well as for future students. Faculty gain the opportunity to work on a course before it ends, and can see what changes work without waiting for the next time the course is offered, or the end of semester student evaluations.SGID is a consultation method developed to collect midsemester feedback from students using structured small and large group conversations, involving four conversations between students, a learned colleague the authors refer to as the SGID consultant, and the instructor. First, student talk with each other in small groups about the learning happening in a course, under the guidance of a consultant (SGID Conversation #1- Student & Students). Then the SGID consultant engages the students in a conversation about how the feedback provided impacts the learning in the course (SGID Conversation #2 - Students & Consultant). Then there is a conversation between the consultant and the instructor, where they discuss how the feedback provided by the students can best inform the pedagogical approaches and strategies used by the instructor (SGID Conversation #3 - Consultant & Instructor). Finally, the instructor closes the feedback loop with a conversation with their students about what they learned and how best to move forward (SGID Conversation #4 - Instructor & Students). These conversations during the middle of the semester change the way students think about the teaching and learning endeavor, the way instructors perceive the learning challenges of their courses, and the quality of the institutional academic culture. Most importantly, the SGID equips the instructor with the knowledge to make midsemester course corrections that can profoundly impact the ways students navigate the course, communicate with the instructor, and realize the ways effective teaching can enhance learning.

The Middle: How to keep going in pursuit of your goals

by Travis Gale

On 1 January 1999, Travis Gale (aged 17) and Stephen Bonaconsa (aged 27) left Johannesburg on a mission to cycle across four continents and raise R1 million for children living with, and affected by HIV/AIDS in KwaZulu-Natal. They pedalled out of Johannesburg, riding mountain bikes equipped with panniers, carrying the basic requirements for an adventure. They rode unsupported. No Instagram or Facebook. It was just the two of them and the open road. The pair successfully cycled over 16 000 kilometres, across four continents, through 16 countries, raising R1.7 million for their cause. When asked to share about his experience, Travis very rarely spends time talking about the start or the finish of the tour. The stories Travis shares are from The Middle. It’s The Middle that tests us with challenges, yielding a multitude of emotions. It’s The Middle that involves the raw and often painful need to dig deep, to push through the barriers that stand in our way, and show ourselves what we are capable of. The Middle is what we, as human beings, were designed for.We can all pitch up at start lines. We can all celebrate a finish. But no finish is without a Middle and every Middle is where WHO WE ARE is revealed. This book, The Middle, includes eight stories, drawn from eight key days of a world cycle tour, which will encourage and equip people through The Middle, the territory we must navigate in pursuit of our goals.Keep going.Increase momentum towards meaningful goals.Develop grit and resilience in the midst of tough terrain.Push through barriers that consistently get in the way.Learn practical frameworks for making things happen.Stretch yourself to do more than you thought possible.Finish well!

The Middle Class in Emerging Societies: Consumers, Lifestyles and Markets (Routledge Research in Cultural and Media Studies)

by Leslie L. Marsh Hongmei Li

This volume examines the discursive construction of the meanings and lifestyle practices of the middle class in the rapidly transforming economies of Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, focusing on the social, political and cultural implications at local and global levels. While drawing a comparative analysis of what it means to be middle class in these different locations, the essays offer a connective understanding of the middle class phenomenon in emerging market economies and lay the groundwork for future research on emerging, transitional societies. The book addresses three key dimensions: the discursive creation of the middle class, the construction of the cultural identity through consumption practices and lifestyle choices, and the social, political and cultural consequences related to globalization and neoliberalism.

Middle Classes in Africa: Changing Lives and Conceptual Challenges (Frontiers of Globalization)

by Lena Kroeker David O'Kane Tabea Scharrer

This volume challenges the concept of the ‘new African middle class’ with new theoretical and empirical insights into the changing lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. Diverse middle classes are on the rise, but models of class based on experiences from other regions of the world cannot be easily transferred to the African continent. Empirical contributions, drawn from a diverse range of contexts, address both African histories of class formation and the political roles of the continent’s middle classes, and also examine the important interdependencies that cut across inter-generational, urban-rural and class divides. This thought-provoking book argues emphatically for a revision of common notions of the 'middle class', and for the inclusion of insights 'from the South' into the global debate on class.Middle Classes in Africa will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, as well as NGOs and policy makers with an interest in African societies.

The Middle East: A Guide to Politics, Economics, Society and Culture

by Barry Rubin

The Middle East is an area of great importance globally, yet misperceptions abound. Events have made it a region of special interest to the West and so the search for understanding gains momentum. This publication is intended to clarify the region’s complex history and issues. In developing this project, the contributors’ set out to explore seven significant themes that are usually not found in other sources. While many books focus on political history and conflicts, this two-volume work deals specifically with culture, religion, women, economics, governance, and media, as well as the role that the region’s modern history has played in shaping its society and worldview.

The Middle East Economies in Times of Transition (International Economic Association Series)

by Ishac Diwan

Diwan and Galal looks at the structure and prospects of the Middle East economies after the 2011 Uprisings, focusing on issues of economic growth, inequality, the impact of oil, and the unfolding political transitions. On the growth question, the book looks into the extent of structural transformation of the economy, the political economy reasons for the lack of structural change, and the external conditions in the EU and in the GCC that underpin the lack of structural change. On inequality, the book offers new measures of equality of opportunity in human development and in the job market, and it also reviews the complex political economy of subsidy removal. Regarding natural resources, the volume provides three innovations: connecting the notion of 'oil curse' to the global phenomena of asset bubbles; evidence that resource curse effects do not rise monotonically with the size of the resource rent, but rather, according to an inverted U shape; and an extension of the concept of rent to the other non-oil rents that are also predominant in the region. Finally, the volume places the political transition in the region in a global perspective using various methods – theoretical, comparative, and empirical, and it explores the relationship between democracy in its variety of forms and economic development.

The Middle East in the New World Order

by Haifaa A. Jawad

The 1990-91 Gulf War, the Israeli-PLO agreement, instances of political and economic reform, and the radical political reassertion of Islam, all indicate that the post-Cold War Middle East is in the grip of dramatic changes. This has generated considerable enthusiasm. Yet such transformation to the political landscape bring with them daunting difficulties. The Middle East faces a host of problems urgently in need of solutions if a successful new world order is to be built on the ruins of the old. In this book, an international group of scholars addresses these issues, and considers the options for the political, social, and economic reconstruction of the region. Themes covered include: democratisation; the Arab state system in the new global environment; the civil war in Arabia; security structures; the Arab-Israeli conflict; the role and potential contribution of pan-Islamism and pan-Arabism; and the prospects for economic revival. Throughout, the linkages between regional dynamics and the changing global environment are highlighted. Case-studies are drawn from the whole region: from North Africa to the Gulf, and from Syria to Yemen.

The Middle East Unveiled: A Cultural And Practical Guide For All Western Business Professionals

by Donna Marsh

Why did Mr Abdul Rahman Hassan seem uncomfortable when I asked him if his Christian name was Abdul?A" Many organisations new to the Middle East become very successful; many more struggle, and some will fail altogether. Often, the difference between a successful organisation and one that fails is that organisation's level of cultural intelligence. Cultural intelligence has never been more important as businesses globalise, especially in parts of the world that are very different to markets in the West. Cultural and social mistakes can cost businesses dearly. Learning how to do business in the Middle East without causing offence is crucial. This book provides cultural and practical business intelligence for all Western business people working throughout the Middle East. It also focuses on issues specifically important to Western businesswomen, as well as for men who might be working with Arab and Muslim women. It can make the difference between success and failure for the reader and his or her organisation.

The Middle East Water Question: Hydropolitics and the Global Economy (International Library Of Human Geography Ser.)

by Tony Allan

Is there enough water on this planet for a global population that will shortly double its present size? The answer is of huge importance for people everywhere, but particularly to the peoples and political leaders of the Middle East and North Africa. Already, the region's economies are as dependant on water from outside the region as they are on the renewable waters of the region. They will be much more dependant in the future. Professor Allan's important new book aims to remove much of the confusion surrounding the issue of water in the Middle East. As well as explaining the particular issues of conflict in the region, he argues that the answer to these problems lies at the global rather than local level. The national water policies of the region (political as well as economic) can only be properly understood at an international level. And it is from this vantage point that solutions - from rendering water globally available to addressing the environmental isses to do with its use - must be found. _The Middle East Water Question_ is a major book by one of the world's leading authorities on water issues - the product of a decade of involvement with officials, professionals, Middle East and North African governments and international agencies such as the World Bank and FAO.
