Alan Turing (Real Lives)

by Jim Eldridge

Alan Turing was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. He created one of the first designs for a stored-program computer and is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. During World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking centre, where he was responsible for breaking German naval codes, including the supposedly unbreakable Enigma code, and helping the Atlantic convoys avoid German U-boat attacks. This work probably shortened World War II by up to four years, saving millions of lives. This is the story of the amazing life and work of a British hero and one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century.

Albus Dumbledore (large print)

by Rnib

This image shows Albus Dumbledore standing in his study beside a small bookcase. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left, when the image is the correct way up. Dumbledore is on the left of the page and his bookcase is on the right. He is shown facing you so both his eyes can be found. Dumbledore wears a pair of half-moon reading glasses which he is not looking through because he is looking at you. Between his nose and smiling mouth, Dumbledore has a huge moustache which merges with his long, silver hair on each side of his face and his very long beard. It hangs right down his front, with the pointed end tucked behind his belt and showing below the buckle of his brown leather belt. He wears a light purple robe which reaches to below his knees, and his heeled boots can be seen at the bottom of the image. Draped around his shoulders and over his robe, Dumbledore wears a purple cloak that almost reaches the floor behind his boots. His arms are outstretched to either side of his body. In his hand on the left side of the page he holds his wand. At the right of the page is Dumbledore's bookcase. There are two shelves holding lots of magical spell books of different heights and thicknesses, some upright and some at a slant. On top of the bookcase there are books on either side with a tall candle in a candlestick between them. The book on the left is lying open, with its lower edge showing. The book on the right is closed, with its spine to the left. The candle is lit, and blobs of wax are shown dripping down it.
