Evolving Towards the Internetworked Enterprise: Technological and Organizational Perspectives

by Giuseppina Passiante

A new model of business has emerged within the Digital-Economy called Internetworked Enterprise (IE); it’s a model that posits networks, communities of individuals and refusal of a centralized mindset as the core elements of the new frame of reference. Internetworked Enterprises are called by some scholars 'Extended' Enterprises, which use digital network to co-operate and compete with other e-business community partners by exchanging knowledge and information across trans-national borders.Evolving Towards the Internetworked Enterprise: Technological and Organizational Perspectives is an edited volume based on a three year research project financed by the Italian Ministry of Research and Education. Researchers for this project are located at Polytechnic of Milan, University of Milan, University of Chieti, Engineering S.P.A and ISUFI-University of Salento. This book presents an overview of IE business methodologies, models, and an interpretative framework analyzing the sector and organizational contingencies that influence the digitalization of organizational processes in networks of SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprise). A set of case studies that provide empirical evidence on the IE phenomenon is included as well. This book is designed for advanced-level students in computer science and business management concentrating on e-business, digital computing, information technology, economics of technology and innovation management as a reference or secondary text book. Practitioners working in these fields as corporate strategic planners and consultants will also find this book a valuable asset.

Exact and Heuristic Methods in Combinatorial Optimization: A Study on the Linear Ordering and the Maximum Diversity Problem (Applied Mathematical Sciences #175)

by Rafael Martí Gerhard Reinelt

In the last decades, algorithmic advances as well as hardware and software improvements have provided an excellent environment to create and develop solving methods to hard optimization problems. Modern exact and heuristic techniques are dramatically enhancing our ability to solve significant practical problems. This monograph sets out state-of-the-art methodologies for solving combinatorial optimization problems, illustrating them with two well-known problems. This second edition of the book extends the first one by adding to the ‘linear ordering problem’ (LOP), included in the first edition, the ‘maximum diversity problem’ (MDP). In this way, we provide the reader with the background, elements and strategies to tackle a wide range of different combinatorial optimization problems. The exact and heuristic techniques outlined in these pages can be put to use in any number of combinatorial optimization problems. While the authors employ the LOP and the MDP to illustrate cutting-edge optimization technologies, the book is also a tutorial on how to design effective and successful implementations of exact and heuristic procedures alike. This monograph provides the basic principles and fundamental ideas that will enable students and practitioners to create valuable applications based on both exact and heuristic technologies. Specifically, it is aimed at engineers, scientists, operations researchers, and other applications specialists who are looking for the most appropriate and recent optimization tools to solve particular problems. The book provides a broad spectrum of advances in search strategies with a focus on its algorithmic and computational aspects.

Exact Design of Digital Microfluidic Biochips

In addition to the exact methods, heuristic approaches are provided and the complexity classes of various design problems are determined.Presents exact methods to tackle a variety of design problems for Digital Microfluidic Biochips (DMFBs);Describes an holistic, one-pass approach solving different design steps all at once;Based on a formal model of DMFBs that is easily adaptable to deal with further design tasks.

Exact Exponential Algorithms (Texts in Theoretical Computer Science. An EATCS Series)

by Fedor V. Fomin Dieter Kratsch

For a long time computer scientists have distinguished between fast and slow algo rithms. Fast (or good) algorithms are the algorithms that run in polynomial time, which means that the number of steps required for the algorithm to solve a problem is bounded by some polynomial in the length of the input. All other algorithms are slow (or bad). The running time of slow algorithms is usually exponential. This book is about bad algorithms. There are several reasons why we are interested in exponential time algorithms. Most of us believe that there are many natural problems which cannot be solved by polynomial time algorithms. The most famous and oldest family of hard problems is the family of NP complete problems. Most likely there are no polynomial time al gorithms solving these hard problems and in the worst case scenario the exponential running time is unavoidable. Every combinatorial problem is solvable in ?nite time by enumerating all possi ble solutions, i. e. by brute force search. But is brute force search always unavoid able? De?nitely not. Already in the nineteen sixties and seventies it was known that some NP complete problems can be solved signi?cantly faster than by brute force search. Three classic examples are the following algorithms for the TRAVELLING SALESMAN problem, MAXIMUM INDEPENDENT SET, and COLORING.
