The papers in this volume start with a description of the construction of reduced models through a review of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and reduced basis models, including their mathematical foundations and some challenging applications, then followed by a description of a new generation of simulation strategies based on the use of separated representations (space-parameters, space-time, space-time-parameters, space-space,…), which have led to what is known as Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) techniques. The models can be enriched by treating parameters as additional coordinates, leading to fast and inexpensive online calculations based on richer offline parametric solutions. Separated representations are analyzed in detail in the course, from their mathematical foundations to their most spectacular applications. It is also shown how such an approximation could evolve into a new paradigm in computational science, enabling one to circumvent various computational issues in a vast array of applications in engineering science.

This book presents a systematic explanation of the SIML (Separating Information Maximum Likelihood) method, a new approach to financial econometrics.Considerable interest has been given to the estimation problem of integrated volatility and covariance by using high-frequency financial data. Although several new statistical estimation procedures have been proposed, each method has some desirable properties along with some shortcomings that call for improvement. For estimating integrated volatility, covariance, and the related statistics by using high-frequency financial data, the SIML method has been developed by Kunitomo and Sato to deal with possible micro-market noises.The authors show that the SIML estimator has reasonable finite sample properties as well as asymptotic properties in the standard cases. It is also shown that the SIML estimator has robust properties in the sense that it is consistent and asymptotically normal in the stable convergence sense when there are micro-market noises, micro-market (non-linear) adjustments, and round-off errors with the underlying (continuous time) stochastic process. Simulation results are reported in a systematic way as are some applications of the SIML method to the Nikkei-225 index, derived from the major stock index in Japan and the Japanese financial sector.

The previous two conferences, SETA 1998 and SETA 2001, were held in Singapore and Bergen, Norway, respectively. These conferences are motivated by the many widespread applications of sequences in modern communication systems. These applications include pseudorandom sequences in spread spectrum systems, code-division multiple-access, stream ciphers in cryptography and several connections to coding theory. The Technical Program Committee of SETA 2004 received 59 submitted - pers, many more than the submissions to previous SETA conferences. The C- mittee therefore had the di?cult task of selecting the 33 papers to be presented at the Conference in addition to four invited papers. The authors of papers p- sented at the conference were invited to submit full papers that were refereed before appearing in this proceedings.
