Smart Power Distribution Network: Situation Awareness, Planning, and Operation (Power Systems)

by Leijiao Ge Yuanzheng Li

The surge in renewable and distributed energy sources has posed significant challenges for smart power distribution network (SPDN). These challenges fall into two main categories: the unpredictability of renewable energy sources and the complexities introduced by numerous electrical devices and their interdependencies, affecting forecasting and operational performance. As the emphasis on SPDN's economic and environmental aspects grows, this book focuses on the vital themes of sustainability and cost-efficiency in SPDN forecasting, planning, and operation. It is structured into three key parts:1. SPDN Situation Awareness: This section assesses prior research methods, analyzes their shortcomings while dissecting SPDN's unique situation awareness characteristics. Then, some forecast and virtual collection methods are presented. 2. Boosting SPDN Planning: Addressing optimal planning challenges in SPDN, this part introduces advanced modelling and algorithm solving techniques, tailored to mitigate SPDN's inherent uncertainty.3. Enhancing SPDN Operation: Considering a variety of equipment types and controllable loads, this section explores strategies to boost SPDN operational performance. It covers control methodologies for electric vehicles, flexible loads, energy storage, and related equipments, etc.Tailored for university researchers, engineers, and graduate students in electrical engineering and computer science, this book is a valuable resource for comprehending SPDN's situation awareness, planning, and operation intricacies in the context of sustainability and economic efficiency.

Smart Product Engineering: Proceedings of the 23rd CIRP Design Conference, Bochum, Germany, March 11th - 13th, 2013 (Lecture Notes in Production Engineering)

by Michael Abramovici Rainer Stark

The collection of papers in this book comprises the proceedings of the 23rd CIRP Design Conference held between March 11th and March 13th 2013 at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany. The event was organized in cooperation with the German Academic Society for Product Development – WiGeP. The focus of the conference was on »Smart Product Engineering«, covering two major aspects of modern product creation: the development of intelligent (“smart”) products as well as the new (“smart”) approach of engineering, explicitly taking into account consistent systems integration. Throughout the 97 papers contained in these proceedings, a range of topics are covered, amongst them the different facets and aspects of what makes a product or an engineering solution “smart”. In addition, the conference papers investigate new ways of engineering for production planning and collaboration towards Smart Product Engineering. The publications provide a solid insight into the pressing issues of modern digital product creation facing increasing challenges in a rapidly changing industrial environment. They also give implicit advice how a “smart” product or engineering solution (processes, methods and tools) needs to be designed and implemented in order to become successful.

Smart Sensing and Context: Third European Conference, EuroSSC 2008, Zurich, Switzerland, October 29-31, 2008, Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #5279)

by Daniel Roggen Clemens Lombriser Gerhard Tröster Gerd Kortuem Paul Havinga

This year marks the third edition of EuroSSC. It builds on the success of the past editions, held in Enschede, The Netherlands in 2006, and in Kendal, UK in 2007. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to EuroSSC 2008, in Zurich, Switerland. This volume contains the invited papers and technical peer-reviewed papers selected for presentation at the conference. At EuroSSC we aim to explore technologies, algorithms, architectures, p- tocols, and user aspects underlying context-aware smart surroundings, coop- ating intelligent objects, and their applications. Since its inception, EuroSSC has taken a complementary technology-driven and user-driven view to discuss these aspects. It is one of the particularities of EuroSSC, and the 2008 edition made no exception. In addition we emphasized aspects related to quality of c- text and context-aware feedback by actuator systems. This re?ects the growing importance that context processing in uncertain environments and sensor and actuator networks take in ambient intelligence environments. We received 70 paper submissions. They originate from 30 countries of - rope, the Middle East and Africa (66%), Asia (22%), North America (9%), and South America (3%). These numbers re?ect the European origins of EuroSSC, but also show that EuroSSC is a recognized and attractive platform for parti- pants from all regions of the world.

Smart Sensors and Sensing Technology (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering #20)

by Gourab Sen Gupta

Technological advancements in recent years have enabled the development of tiny, cheap disposable and self contained battery powered computers, known as sensor nodes or “motes”, which can accept input from an attached sensor, process this input and transmit the results wirelessly to some interested device(s). When a number of these nodes work together, conceivably up to hundreds of thousands, a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is formed. Research in the area of wireless sensor networks has become increasingly wid- pread in recent years, partly due to their wide range of potential uses and also partly due to the fact that the technology enabling such networks is now widely available from many di?erent suppliers, such as: Crossbow, MoteIV, Intel and SUN (java based motes). These wireless sensor networks have the potential to allow a level of integration between computers and the physical world that, to date, has been virtually impos- ble. The uses for such networks is almost limitless and include such diverse app- cations as a counter sniper system for urban warfare [1] tracking the path of a forest re [2], determining the structural stability of a building after an earthquake [3], or tracking people or objects inside a building [4], etc.

Smart Service Systems, Operations Management, and Analytics: Proceedings of the 2019 INFORMS International Conference on Service Science (Springer Proceedings in Business and Economics)

by Hui Yang Robin Qiu Weiwei Chen

This volume offers state-of-the-art research in service science and its related research, education and practice areas. It showcases recent developments in smart service systems, operations management and analytics and their impact in complex service systems. The papers included in this volume highlight emerging technology and applications in fields including healthcare, energy, finance, information technology, transportation, sports, logistics, and public services. Regardless of size and service, a service organization is a service system. Because of the socio-technical nature of a service system, a systems approach must be adopted to design, develop, and deliver services, aimed at meeting end users‘ both utilitarian and socio-psychological needs. Effective understanding of service and service systems often requires combining multiple methods to consider how interactions of people, technology, organizations, and information create value under various conditions. The papers in this volume present methods to approach such technical challenges in service science and are based on top papers from the 2019 INFORMS International Conference on Service Science.
