Trends in Control: A European Perspective

by Alberto Isidori

This book contains the text of the plenary lectures and the mini-courses of the European Control Conference (ECC 95) held in Rome, Italy, September 5-September 8, 1995. In particular, the book includes nine essays in which a selected number of prominent authorities present their views on some of the most recent developments in the theory and practice of control systems design and three self-contained sets of lecture notes. Some of the essays are focused on the topic of robust control. The article by J. Ackermann describes how to robustly control the rotational motions of a vehicle, to the purpose of simplifying the driver's task. The contribution by H. K wakernaak presents a detailed discussion of the requirements that performance and robustness impose on control systems design and of the symmetric roles of sensitivity and complementary sensitivity functions. The article by P. Boulet, B. A. Francis, P. C . Hughes and T. Hong describes an experimental testbed facility, called Daisy, whose dynamics emulate those of a real large flexible space structure and whose purpose is to test advanced identification and control design methods. The article of K. Glover discusses recent advances in uncertain system modeling, analysis and design, with ref erence to a flight control case study that has been test flown. The other essays describe advances in fundamental problems of control theory. The article by V. A. Yakubovich is a survey of certain new infinite horizon linear-quadratic optimization problems. The contribution by A. S.

Trends in Control and Decision-Making for Human–Robot Collaboration Systems

by Yue Wang Fumin Zhang

This book provides an overview of recent research developments in the automation and control of robotic systems that collaborate with humans. A measure of human collaboration being necessary for the optimal operation of any robotic system, the contributors exploit a broad selection of such systems to demonstrate the importance of the subject, particularly where the environment is prone to uncertainty or complexity. They show how such human strengths as high-level decision-making, flexibility, and dexterity can be combined with robotic precision, and ability to perform task repetitively or in a dangerous environment. The book focuses on quantitative methods and control design for guaranteed robot performance and balanced human experience from both physical human-robot interaction and social human-robot interaction. Its contributions develop and expand upon material presented at various international conferences. They are organized into three parts covering:one-human–one-robot collaboration;one-human–multiple-robot collaboration; andhuman–swarm collaboration.Individual topic areas include resource optimization (human and robotic), safety in collaboration, human trust in robot and decision-making when collaborating with robots, abstraction of swarm systems to make them suitable for human control, modeling and control of internal force interactions for collaborative manipulation, and the sharing of control between human and automated systems, etc. Control and decision-making algorithms feature prominently in the text, importantly within the context of human factors and the constraints they impose. Applications such as assistive technology, driverless vehicles, cooperative mobile robots, manufacturing robots and swarm robots are considered. Illustrative figures and tables are provided throughout the book.Researchers and students working in controls, and the interaction of humans and robots will learn new methods for human–robot collaboration from this book and will find the cutting edge of the subject described in depth.

Trends in Data Protection and Encryption Technologies

by Valentin Mulder Alain Mermoud Vincent Lenders Bernhard Tellenbach

This open access book reports the results of a study conducted in Switzerland in 2022 to provide an overview of the changing landscape of encryption and data protection technologies and their global usage trends. The Swiss Confederation tasked the Cyber-Defence Campus (CYD Campus) to identify the 38 most relevant encryption and data protection technologies, analyze their expected evolution until 2025, and derive implications for the military, civil society, and economy sectors.Fifty experts from academia, government, and industry have contributed to this study and provided their viewpoints on the different technologies and trends. This comprehensive collection of factsheets provides a reference for organizations and individuals that need to elaborate coherent and efficient data protection and encryption strategies in the coming years. The 38 technologies have been sorted into five categories. First, encryption foundations represent the technologies used to create other encryption applications. Second, low-level applications represent the technologies that focus on micro functionalities. Third, high-level applications represent the technologies that focus on more abstract and macro functionalities. Fourth, data protection represents the technologies used to protect data without encrypting these data. Finally, use cases represent concrete ways the different technologies can be used together to create a working solution. The book serves as a guide for decision-making within administrations, government organizations, and industry. It will also be interesting for the tech-savvy board member or engineers looking to get an entry point into data protection topics. Last not least, the book will also be a valuable reading for anyone interested in data protection and encryption.

Trends in Deep Learning Methodologies: Algorithms, Applications, and Systems (Hybrid Computational Intelligence for Pattern Analysis and Understanding)

by Vincenzo Piuri Angelo Genovese Rajshree Srivastava Sandeep Raj

Trends in Deep Learning Methodologies: Algorithms, Applications, and Systems covers deep learning approaches such as neural networks, deep belief networks, recurrent neural networks, convolutional neural networks, deep auto-encoder, and deep generative networks, which have emerged as powerful computational models. Chapters elaborate on these models which have shown significant success in dealing with massive data for a large number of applications, given their capacity to extract complex hidden features and learn efficient representation in unsupervised settings. Chapters investigate deep learning-based algorithms in a variety of application, including biomedical and health informatics, computer vision, image processing, and more. In recent years, many powerful algorithms have been developed for matching patterns in data and making predictions about future events. The major advantage of deep learning is to process big data analytics for better analysis and self-adaptive algorithms to handle more data. Deep learning methods can deal with multiple levels of representation in which the system learns to abstract higher level representations of raw data. Earlier, it was a common requirement to have a domain expert to develop a specific model for each specific application, however, recent advancements in representation learning algorithms allow researchers across various subject domains to automatically learn the patterns and representation of the given data for the development of specific models.Provides insights into the theory, algorithms, implementation and the application of deep learning techniquesCovers a wide range of applications of deep learning across smart healthcare and smart engineeringInvestigates the development of new models and how they can be exploited to find appropriate solutions

Trends in Distributed Systems: Third International IFIP/GI Working Conference, USM 2000 Munich, Germany, September 12-14, 2000 Proceedings (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #1890)

by Claudia Linnhoff-Popien Heinz-Gerd Hegering

USM 2000 is the third event in a series of international IFIP/GI conferences on Trends in Distributed Systems. Following the venues in Aachen, Germany (1996) and Hamburg, Germany (1998), this event in Munich considers the trend towards a Universal Service Market – USM 2000. The trend towards a universal service market has many origins, e.g., the integration of telecom and data communications, the deregulation e?orts with respect to telco markets, the globalization of information, the virtualization of companies, the requirement of a short time-to-market, the advances in network technologies, the increasing acceptance of e-commerce, and the increase in - bility. This leads to new business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-customer (B2C) environments that o?er both challenges and opportunities to enterprises and end-users. There is the need for ubiquitous services, trading, brokering and information management, for service market and business models, and for ?e- ble infrastructures for dynamic collaboration. Researchers, service vendors, and users must cooperate to set up the app- priate requirements for a universal service market and to ?nd solutions with respect to supporting platforms, middleware, distributed applications, and m- agement. The basis for these solution is a common understanding of means for de?ning, creating, implementing, and deploying the service market. Then, s- vice market makers, service aggregators, service auctioneers, ISP, ASP, BPO, and customers can freely interact in a dynamic, open, and universal market place.
