Web mining is the application of data mining strategies to excerpt learning from web information, i.e. web content, web structure, and web usage data. With the emergence of the web as the predominant and converging platform for communication, business and scholastic information dissemination, especially in the last five years, there are ever increasing research groups working on different aspects of web mining mainly in three directions. These are: mining of web content, web structure and web usage. In this context there are good number of frameworks and benchmarks related to the metrics of the websites which is certainly weighty for B2B, B2C and in general in any e-commerce paradigm. Owing to the popularity of this topic there are few books in the market, dealing more on such performance metrics and other related issues. This book, however, omits all such routine topics and lays more emphasis on the classification and clustering aspects of the websites in order to come out with the true perception of the websites in light of its usability.In nutshell, Web Mining: A Synergic Approach Resorting to Classifications and Clustering showcases an effective methodology for classification and clustering of web sites from their usability point of view. While the clustering and classification is accomplished by using an open source tool WEKA, the basic dataset for the selected websites has been emanated by using a free tool site-analyzer. As a case study, several commercial websites have been analyzed. The dataset preparation using site-analyzer and classification through WEKA by embedding different algorithms is one of the unique selling points of this book. This book’s main goals are to bring together in a concise way all the methodologies, standards and recommendations related to Data, Queries, Links, Semantics, Validation and other issues concerning machine-readable data on the Web, to describe them in detail, to provide examples of their use, and to discuss how they contribute to – and how they have been used thus far on – the “Web of Data”. As the content of the Web becomes increasingly machine readable, increasingly complex tasks can be automated, yielding more and more powerful Web applications that are capable of discovering, cross-referencing, filtering, and organizing data from numerous websites in a matter of seconds.The book is divided into nine chapters, the first of which introduces the topic by discussing the shortcomings of the current Web and illustrating the need for a Web of Data. This work presents a study of cache replacement strategies designed for static web content. Proxy servers can improve performance by caching static web content such as cascading style sheets, java script source files, and large files such as images. This topic is particularly important in wireless ad hoc networks, in which mobile devices act as proxy servers for a group of other mobile devices. Opening chapters present an introduction to web requests and the characteristics of web objects, web proxy servers and Squid, and artificial neural networks. This is followed by a comprehensive review of cache replacement strategies simulated against different performance metrics. The work then describes a novel approach to web proxy cache replacement that uses neural networks for decision making, evaluates its performance and decision structures, and examines its implementation in a real environment, namely, in the Squid proxy server.
