Gender, Food and COVID-19: Global Stories of Harm and Hope (Routledge Focus on Environment and Sustainability)

by Paige Castellanos Carolyn E. Sachs Ann R. Tickamyer

This book documents how COVID-19 impacts gender, agriculture, and food systems across the globe with on-the-ground accounts and personal reflections from scholars, practitioners, and community members. During the coronavirus pandemic with many people under lockdown, continual agricultural production and access to food remain essential. Women provide much of the formal and informal work in agriculture and food production, distribution, and preparation often under precarious conditions. A cadre of scholars and practitioners from across the globe provide their timely observations on these issues as well as more personal reflections on its impact on their lives and work. Four major themes emerge from these accounts and are interwoven throughout: the pervasiveness of food insecurity, the ubiquity of women’s care work, food justice, and policies and research that can that can result in a resilience that reimagines the future for greater gender and intersectional equality. We identify what lessons we can learn from this global pandemic about research and practices related to gender, food, and agricultural systems to strive for more equitable arrangements. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars and practitioners working on gender and food and agriculture during this global pandemic and beyond.

Gene Eating: The science of obesity and the truth about diets

by Dr Giles Yeo

'It is rare to find a book, written by a world-class scientist, that is both informative and entertaining. Giles not only delves into the science of obesity but, with honesty and great precision, skewers many of the more foolish fad diets out there. ' DR MICHAEL MOSLEY, bestselling author of The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet 'A hard-to-fault book written in a way that entertains as well as it informs ... Yeo's study of human appetite is packed with insights and revelations, incorporating up-to-date scientific thinking ... It's an anti-diet diet book you can trust' DAILY EXPRESS 'I really enjoy working with Giles - he makes so much sense, and cuts through the confusion about diet and health with refreshing directness. His excellent book Gene Eating busts myths and homes in on what you really need need to know. It's been a genuine help to me and I'm sure it will be to everyone who reads it.' HUGH FEARNLEY-WHITTINGSTALL 'Dr Yeo is a leading scientist in the field of obesity and one of our best science communicators. Everyone worried about their weight ought to read this book to digest its message about the importance of genetics.' ROBERT PLOMIN, author of Blueprint: How DNA Makes Us Who We Are 'An excellent and engaging book, but also an important one. It is about time that a serious, respected academic provided a voice of reason' Anthony Warner aka THE ANGRY CHEF 'Gene Eating is just a fantastic book exactly as you'd expect - but more so. Mainly it's very funny, packed with science and trivia and genuinely helpful weightloss and nutrition info' DR CHRIS VAN TULLEKEN, the BBCWhy are we all getting fatter? Why are some people hungrier than others? And why don't diets work? In an age of misinformation and pseudo-science, the world is getting fatter and the diet makers are getting richer. So how do we break this cycle that's killing us all? Drawing on the very latest science and his own genetic research at Cambridge University, Dr Giles Yeo has written the seminal 'anti-diet' diet book. Exploring the history of our food, debunking marketing nonsense and toxic diet advice, and confronting the advocates of 'clean eating', Dr Giles translates his pioneering research into an engaging, must-read study of the human appetite. Inspiring and revelatory, Gene Eating is an urgent and essential book that will empower us all with the facts we need to establish healthy relationships with food - and change the way we eat

Genetically Engineered Food: A Self-Defense Guide for Consumers

by Ronnie Cummins Ben Lilliston

Stormy debates about genetically engineered (GE) food have raged throughout the world in recent years, and the issue is now more potent than ever. Seventy to eighty percent of processed foods now sold in supermarkets contain genetically engineered ingredients, and the trend is growing at a startling rate. This second, completely revised edition of Genetically Engineered Food is an all-in-one guide written specifically to help consumers educate themselves about the risks posed by GE foods. Ronnie Cummins and Ben Lilliston, both leading consumer advocates, provide comprehensive, up-to-the-minute, action-inspiring information, including how to identify GE foods, products to avoid, brands that are GE-free, and how to shop and act with a purpose. They discuss all of the ethical, environmental, and health arguments against GE food, how these foods are being regulated in the United States and abroad, and why consumers are right to oppose them. Genetically Engineered Foods is the first and still one of the few consumer-oriented guides addressing this important subject.

Genetically Modified Crops and Food Security: Commercial, Ethical and Health Considerations (Earthscan Food and Agriculture)

Genome Editing and Global Food Security: Molecular Engineering Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture (Earthscan Food and Agriculture)

by Zeba Khan Durre Shahwar Yasmin Heikal

With the rapid increase in the global population and changing climatic impacts on agriculture, this book demonstrates how genome editing will be an indispensable technique to overcome ongoing and prospective agricultural challenges. This book examines the role of genome editing in improving crop yields and contributing to global food security. It summarizes a range of genome editing techniques and discusses the roles they can play in producing a new generation of high-yielding, climate-ready crops. This includes site-specific nucleases, precision genome engineering, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, and bioinformatics. It showcases how these gene editing techniques can tailor plants to not only increase yield-related traits but to also make them better suited to their environment and to be resistant to pests and extreme climatic events, such as droughts. The book also examines genome editing regulations and policies, the commercialization of genome-edited crops, and biosafety and biosecurity concerns. Overall, this book reveals and showcases how genome editing can improve crop resilience and production to address current and future agricultural challenges and alleviation of global food security concerns. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of agricultural science, crop and plant science, genome editing, sustainable agriculture, biotechnology, and food security.
