The Dark Bible: Cultures of Interpretation in Early Modern England

by Alison Knight

The Dark Bible explores early modern England's interactions with difficult aspects of the Bible. For the early modern reader, although the Bible was understood to be perfect, sufficient, and transcendent (indeed, the Protestant Reformation required it), it was not always experienced as such. While traditional interpretive precepts, such as the claim that all dark passages could be read in the light of clear ones, were frequently recited by early modern commentators, their actual encounters with the darkness of the Bible suggest that writers, commentators, and translators were often deeply uncomfortable with the disjunction between what the Bible should be, and what it actually was. The Dark Bible investigates writers' and translators' attempts to explain, accommodate, circumvent, and repair problematic texts across a range of genres and contexts. It charts early modern English use of biblical scholarship in vernacular culture and investigates how vernacular writing in various genres could give voice to questioning and confused biblical interactions. The Dark Bible demonstrates that early modern writers and critics engaged extensively with the Bible's difficulties, attempting to circumvent and repair problematic texts, and otherwise reconcile the darkness of the Bible with theories of the Bible's perfection and clarity.

Dark Money and the Politics of School Privatization

by Maurice T. Cunningham

This book goes deep behind the scenes of school privatization campaigns to expose the complex networks of funding that sustain these efforts - often hidden from the view of the public. Using the example of a 2016 Massachusetts charter school referendum, Cunningham shows how wealthy individuals support charter school expansion through so-called “social welfare” organizations, thereby obscuring the true sources of funding while influencing major public policy votes. With vast wealth and a political agenda, foundations have helped to reshape the reform landscape in urban education.

Dark Pedagogy: Education, Horror and the Anthropocene (Palgrave Studies in Education and the Environment)

by Jonas Andreasen Lysgaard Stefan Bengtsson Martin Hauberg-Lund Laugesen

Dark pedagogy explores how different perspectives can be incorporated into a darker understanding of environmental and sustainability education. Drawing on the work of the classic horror author H.P. Lovecraft and new materialist insights of speculative realism, the authors link Lovecraft’s ‘tales of the horrible’ to the current spectres of environmental degradation, climate change, and pollution. In doing so, they draw parallels between how humans have always related to the ‘horrible’ things that are scaled beyond our understanding and how education can respond to an era of climate catastrophe in the age of the Anthropocene. A new and darker understanding of environmental and sustainability education is thus developed: using the tripartite reaction pattern of denial, insanity and death to frame the narrative, the book subsequently examines the specific challenges of potentials of developing education and pedagogy for an age of mass extinction. This unflinching book will appeal to students and scholars of dark pedagogies as well as those interested in environment and sustainability education.

The Dark Side of Leadership: Identifying and Overcoming Unethical Practice in Organizations (Advances in Educational Administration #26)

by Anthony H. Normore Jeffrey S. Brooks

This book explores the dark side of leadership–those areas of unethical, unlawful and unconscionable practice in which some organizational leaders engage. Each chapter addresses a unique aspect of such practice, and takes on difficult (and often ignored) topics such as lying, deliberate miscommunication, racism, corruption, sexism, ageism, greed, abuse of power, and recruiting and promoting unqualified personnel to leadership positions. The authors identify organizational issues and problems while also offering solutions to improve leadership practices that prevent interpersonal, organizational, and institutional toxicity. The general content is framed by, but not limited to, theoretical frameworks, such as ethics, values, chaos and complexity theory, power, free will, trust, critical race theory, systems theory, cultural (in)competency, and social justice. Importantly, the book includes scholars from around the world (e.g., Canada, Australia, Israel, USA) and learners of leadership from across sectors such as higher education, K-12 education, public safety, communication, business, and other relational-oriented fields of inquiry and practice.

Dark Sound: Feminine Voices in Sonic Shadow (Ex:Centrics)

by D Ferrett

Dark sound carries the dense cultural weight of darkness; it is the undertow of music that embodies melancholy, desire, grief, violence, rage, pain, loss and longing. Compelling and unnerving, dark sound immerses bodies in the darkest moments and delves into the depths of our hidden inner selves. There is a strangely perverse appeal about music that conjures intense affective states and about sound that can move its listeners to the very edge of the sayable. Through a series of case studies that include Moor Mother, Anna Calvi, Björk, Chelsea Wolfe and Diamanda Galás, D Ferrett argues that the extreme limits and transgressions of dark sound not only imply the limits of language, but are moreover tied to a cultural and historical association between darkness and the feminine within music and music discourse. Whilst the oppressive and violent associations between darkness and femininity are acknowledged, the author challenges their value to misogynistic, racist, capitalist and patriarchal power, showing how dark sound is charged with social, creative and political momentum.

Darstellungen und Darstellungswechsel als Mittel zur Begriffsbildung: Eine Untersuchung in rechnerunterstützten Lernumgebungen (Dortmunder Beiträge zur Entwicklung und Erforschung des Mathematikunterrichts #11)

by Heinz Laakmann

Darwin-Inspired Learning (New Directions in Mathematics and Science Education)

by Carolyn J. Boulter Michael J. Reiss Dawn L. Sanders

Charles Darwin has been extensively analysed and written about as a scientist, Victorian, father and husband. However, this is the first book to present a carefully thought out pedagogical approach to learning that is centered on Darwin’s life and scientific practice. The ways in which Darwin developed his scientific ideas, and their far reaching effects, continue to challenge and provoke contemporary teachers and learners, inspiring them to consider both how scientists work and how individual humans ‘read nature’. Darwin-inspired learning, as proposed in this international collection of essays, is an enquiry-based pedagogy, that takes the professional practice of Charles Darwin as its source. Without seeking to idealise the man, Darwin-inspired learning places importance on: • active learning • hands-on enquiry • critical thinking • creativity • argumentation • interdisciplinarity. In an increasingly urbanised world, first-hand observations of living plants and animals are becoming rarer. Indeed, some commentators suggest that such encounters are under threat and children are living in a time of ‘nature-deficit’. Darwin-inspired learning, with its focus on close observation and hands-on enquiry, seeks to re-engage children and young people with the living world through critical and creative thinking modeled on Darwin’s life and science.

Das 1 x 1 der Präsentation: Für Schule, Studium und Beruf

by Karl-Christof Renz

by Rolf-Torsten Kramer Werner Helsper Sven Thiersch Carolin Ziems

by Hannes Brandau
