by Mark Blythe Andrew Monk

How should we understand and design for fun as a User Experience? This new edition of a classic book is for students, designers and researchers who want to deepen their understanding of fun in the context of HCI. The 2003 edition was the first book to do this and has been influential in broadening the field. It is the most downloaded book in the Springer HCI Series. This edition adds 14 new chapters that go well beyond the topics considered in 2003. New chapter topics include: online dating, interactive rides, wellbeing, somaesthetics, design fiction, critical design and participatory design methods. The first edition chapters are also reprinted, with new notes by their authors setting the context in which the 2003 chapter was written and explaining the developments since then. Taken with the new chapters this adds up to a total of 35 theoretical and practical chapters written by the most influential thinkers from academia and industry in this field.

Further Education And The Twelve Dancing Princesses (PDF)

by Maire Daley Rebecca Maxted Lou Mycroft Damien Page Rob Peutrell Doug Rouxel Rob Smith Wesley Storey Dan Taubman Jane Weatherby Kevin Orr Joel Petrie Matt O'Leary Gemma Breed Frank Coffield Beatrix E. Groves Rania Hafez Yvonne Hillier Julie Hughes

'Cinderella' is the dominant metaphor used to describe further education, but this book challenges the deficit metaphor and replaces it with another of the Brothers Grimm's tales, the 'Twelve Dancing Princesses'. The twelve princesses escape from the room they are locked in to dance all through each night. As a metaphor for teaching in FE, this tale suggests the possibility of subversion, of autonomy in teaching and learning, and a collective rather than individualist notion of professionalism, even within repressive contexts. Twelve chapters from twelve experienced practitioners suggest professional development that will culminate in a collective, celebratory alternative. They explore the professional aspirations and commitment to social justice of prospective teacher education students in spite of the current ideological context of FE. They argue for inspiration from critical pedagogy so FE can maintain transformative professional space. They explore the impact of technology on learning, and the physical spaces in which teaching and learning are situated. They challenge the prevailing managerialist use of lesson observation and the resistance and collusion of FE managers. And they propose a notion of professionalism that focuses on educational values rather than market forces. This engaging, accessible and thought-provoking book is essential reading for teacher training courses, postgraduate students, sector researchers, and members of professional bodies and trade unions. If the sector is to be Grimm, asserts this inspirational collection, it should be so on our own terms: powerful, democratic and professional.

Further Education, Professional and Occupational Pedagogy: Knowledge and Experiences (Routledge Research in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education)

by Sai Loo

The further education (and skills) sector in England has been viewed as a backwater of educational research compared to the other sectors. This comparative lack of research and related publications may be due in part to the huge diversity of the sector. Further Education, Professional and Occupational Pedagogy addresses some of the gaps by bringing together empirical research and theoretical frameworks to give a coherent understanding of the sector, emphasising the occupational experiences of deliverers, alongside their pedagogic and life experiences. This book also includes investigations on the education of professionals in the higher education sector. The overall theme of this book relates to the teaching and learning of work-related provisions in further and higher education. The book covers topics such as FE teachers' emotional ecology, their professional identities, a systematic literature review of FE teachers' professional identities, a reconceptualisation of widening participation from a teaching perspective, pedagogic implications of teachers in professional education, and curriculum formation of creative professionals in higher education. This book will be vital reading for researchers and academics in the fields of professional learning, teacher training and education, and vocational and occupational education. It will also appeal to policy-makers, teacher educators and education professionals.
