Pun: Experifigural Writings in Art&art Education (Studies in Curriculum Theory Series)

by jan jagodzinski

In Postmodern Dilemmas: Outrageous Essays in Art&Art Education and Pun(k) Deconstruction: Experifigural Writings in Art&Art Education, jan jagodzinski presents a series of essays covering a timespan of approximately ten years. These essays chart the theory and practice of art&art education as it relates to issues of postmodernity and poststructuralism concerning representation, identity politics, consumerism, postmodern architecture, ecology, phallocentrism of the artistic canon, pluriculturalism, media and technology, and AIDS. As a former editor of The Journal of Social Theory in Art Education and a founding member for the Caucus on Social Theory in Art Education, the author attempts to deconstruct the current art education paradigm, which is largely based on modernist tenets, and to reorient art education practice to social issues as developed in both media education and cultural studies. Part of the intent in these two volumes is to undertake a sustained critique of the 1982 Art in the Mainstream (A.I.M.) statement, which continues to be considered as the core value for art education. The distinct intention of this critique is to put forward a new value base for art&art education in these postmodern times. Many of the essays raise the need to be attentive to sex/gender issues in art&art education and the need to read the artistic discourse "otherwise." There is a sustained critique of the art programs developed by the Getty Center for the Arts, whose arts curriculum presents the paradigm case of late modernist thinking. Some essays are written in a provocative form that tries to accommodate such content. This is particularly the case in Pun(k) Deconstruction, where architectural discourse is deconstructed, and which includes an "artistic performance" given by the author in 1987. This singular set of volumes combines scholarship in the areas of gender studies, aesthetics, art history, art education, poststructuralism, and cultural studies in a unique blend of theory and practice for rethinking the field of art education.

Punctuation Matters: Advice on Punctuation for Scientific and Technical Writing

by John Kirkman

Punctuation Matters gives straight answers to the queries raised most frequently by practitioners in computing, engineering, medicine and science as they grapple with day-to-day tasks in writing and editing. The advice it offers is based on John Kirkman’s long experience of providing courses on writing and editing in academic centres, large companies, research organisations and government departments in the UK, Europe and in USA. Sample material discussed in the book comes from real documents from computing, engineering and scientific contexts, giving the guidelines an immediately recognisable, ‘true to life’ relevance. The advice is down-to-earth and up-to-date. It is clearly set out in three parts: part one states a policy for clear and reliable punctuation part two gives a series of alphabetically arranged guidelines, to be ‘dipped into’ for guidance on how to use the main punctuation marks in English part three contains appendices on paragraphing, word-division and how conventions of punctuation differ in the UK and the USA. Punctuation Matters is the essential guide for everyone who has to write in scientific, technical and medical contexts, with clear explanations on punctuation, what it does and how to use it.

Punishing Schools: Fear and Citizenship in American Public Education (Law, Meaning, And Violence)

by William (Bill) Lyons Julie Drew

In a society increasingly dominated by zero-tolerance thinking, Punishing Schools argues that our educational system has become both the subject of legislative punishment and an instrument for the punishment of children. William Lyons and Julie Drew analyze the connections between state sanctions against our schools (the diversion of funding to charter schools, imposition of unfunded mandates, and enforcement of dubious forms of teacher accountability) and the schools' own infliction of punitive measures on their students-a vicious cycle that creates fear and encourages the development of passive and dependent citizens. "Public schools in the United States are no longer viewed as a public good. On the contrary, they are increasingly modeled after prisons, and students similarly have come to mirror the suspicions and fears attributed to prisoners. Punishing Schools is one of the most insightful, thoughtful, and liberating books I have read on what it means to understand, critically engage, and transform the present status and state of schools from objects of fear and disdain to institutions that value young people, teachers, and administrators as part of a broader vision of social justice, freedom, and equality. William Lyons and Julie Drew have done their homework and provide all the necessary elements for understanding and defending schools as public spheres that are foundational to a democracy. This book should be required reading for every student, teacher, parent, and concerned citizen in the United States. In the end, this book is not just about saving schools, it is also about saving democracy and offering young people a future that matters." --Henry Giroux, McMaster University "This is an important book . . . a distinctive contribution. The authors move back and forth convincingly between the micropolitics of school discipline and the 'politics writ large' of the liberal left and the utopian right. The result is an expansive, idealistic, and well-grounded book in the spirit of the very best of social control literature." --Stuart Scheingold, Professor Emeritus, Political Science, University of Washington William Lyons is Director of Center for Conflict Management and Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Akron. Julie Drew is Associate Professor of English, University of Akron.

by Keziah Featherstone

School leadership is becoming awfully compliant; flat-pack headteachers and homogenised leadership teams. When did all this conformity ever bring about any lasting change? Drawing parallels between the fiercely independent punk spirit and the demands of modern school leadership, Punk Leadership offers a fresh perspective on how to navigate the complexities of the education system while staying true to your values and vision. This is not an anarchic book – it systematically looks at all aspects of school leadership, from curriculum development to managing staff, from inclusion to accountability, and finds the punk in them. Jam-packed with useful guidance to help you find your way through the complexities of senior leadership in schools, Punk Leadership is about finding your own solutions and empowering you to do what you know is right. Keziah Featherstone is a secondary headteacher in the West Midlands. She is a co-founder and strategic leader for WomenEd and a member of the Headteachers’ Roundtable.

Pupil As Scientist (UK Higher Education OUP Humanities & Social Sciences Education OUP)

by Rosalind Driver

The Pupil as Scientist intends to give teachers and student teachers a better understanding of the thinking of young adolescent pupils in science lessons and to indicate the difficulties such pupils have in understanding the more abstract or formal ideas with which they are presented. It is practical in its orientation as the issues discussed are illustrated with examples drawn from dialogue and observations made in science classes. One of Rosalind Driver's main themes is that science teachers must recognise more fully and act upon the preconceptions and alternative frameworks which pupils bring to their study of science.Despite is practical orientation, the book addresses some fundamental questions arguing for a reappraisal of science teaching in secondary schools in the light of developments in cognitive psychology and philosophy of science. This is an accessible, authoritative and very helpful book for all concerned with the teaching of science in the secondary years.

Pupil Book Study: An evidence-informed guide to help quality assure the curriculum

by Alex Bedford

Pupil Book Study is a window into the 'lived experience' of pupils, as opposed to just the observed experience. It is also a mirror in which to reflect professional practice and identify what helps learning, and what hinders it by outlining clear and coherent structures in which to talk with pupils and look at their books. Pupil Book Study gives headteachers, senior and middle leaders a systematic toolkit to evaluate the impact of the curriculum through studying teaching and learning. Infused with cognitive science research and evidence-informed practice, it offers schools the architecture for excellence; helping remove the risk of making assumptions. Pupil Book Study is a guide for schools that offers 7 specific and fully exemplified areas to focus quality assurance systems. The keystone between teaching, learning and the curriculum, Pupil Book Study offers schools the tools to explain why things are as they are and presents solutions to the areas that limit or hinder progress. Schools report that Pupil Book Study has been some of the most powerful and impactful work they have ever undertaken, resulting in positive change. In November 2020, Pupil Book Study was shared with the Deputy Director, Senior HMI and Policy makers at Ofsted.
