Intercultural Aesthetics in Traditional Chinese Theatre: From 1978 to the Present

This book traces the transformation of traditional Chinese theatre’s (xiqu) aesthetics during its encounters with Western drama and theatrical forms in both mainland China and Taiwan since 1978. Through analyzing both the text and performances of eight adapted plays from William Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht, and Samuel Beckett, this book elaborates on significant changes taking place in playwriting, acting, scenography, and stage-audience relations stemming from intercultural appropriation. As exemplified by each chapter, during the intercultural dialogue of Chinese and foreign elements there exists one-sided dominance by either culture, fusion, and hybridity, which corresponds to the various facets of China’s pursuit of modernity between its traditional and Western influences.

Interdisciplinary and Global Perspectives on Intersex

Die filmgeographische Studie analysiert, wie Spielfilme interkulturelle Begegnungen inszenieren. Die Autorin erarbeitet anhand von 17 US-amerikanischen Spielfilmen, wie interkulturelle Begegnungen strategisch inszeniert werden. Hierbei hinterfragt sie kritisch die Darstellungen gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen, welche sich im Kontext des dargebotenen Miteinanders ergeben. Das Ergebnis sind sechs vielschichtige Dimensionen interkultureller Räume. Diese offenbaren, dass NYC letztlich vor allem als Stadt kultureller Koexistenz inszeniert wird – als Projektionsfolie einer Gesellschaft, in der sich Individuen anhand diffuser kultureller Marker beständig voneinander abgrenzen. West German cinema of the 1960s is frequently associated with the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers, collectively known by the 1970s as the "New German Cinema." Yet for domestic and international audiences at the time, German cinema primarily meant popular genres such as exotic adventure films, Gothic crime thrillers, westerns, and sex films, which were dismissed by German filmmakers and critics of the 1970s as "Daddy's Cinema." The symbol of (imagined) childhood innocence, the site of intrigue and nostalgia for adults, a metaphor for the precarious nature of subjectivity itself, the girl is caught between infancy and adulthood, between objectification and power. The international dimension of the failed Algerian transition: Democracy betrayed? (Perspectives on Democratic Practice)

The book builds an innovative theoretical framework, through which previously neglected international factors are brought into the analysis of transitions to democracy. The case of Algeria is then explored in great detail. This volume is an important contribution to the literature on democratization and provides an interesting analysis of Algerian politics during the last two decades. More specifically, the book examines how international variables influence the behaviour and activities of Algerian political actors. By bridging the comparative politics and international relations literatures, the book offers a new understanding of the initiation, development and outcome of transitions to democracy. International factors, far from being marginal and secondary, are treated as central explanatory variables. Such external factors were crucial in the Algerian failed transition to democracy, when the attitudes and actions of key international actors shaped the domestic game and its final outcome. In particular, the book explores the controversial role of the Islamic Salvation Front and how its part was perceived abroad. In addition the book argues that international factors significantly contribute to explaining the persistence of authoritarian rule in Algeria, to its integration into the global economy and its co-optation into the war on terror. This book will be useful for scholars and students of processes of democratisation, for Middle East and North Africa specialists and for general readers interested in the role of international actors across the Arab world.
