GBH

by Ted Lewis

A new edition of the crime masterpiece from the author of Get CarterBritish crime icon Ted Lewis's GBH is an unnerving tale of paranoia and madness in the heart of London's 1970s criminal underworld. In London, George Fowler heads a lucrative criminal syndicate that specialises in illegal pornography. Fowler is king, with a beautiful woman at his side and a swanky penthouse office, but his world is in jeopardy. Just as it seems possible for Fowler to rise again, another trigger may cause his total, irreparable unravelling.'This is vintage British pulp fiction at its fast, furious and thoroughly sleazy best'- Laura Wilson, Guardian'1980 wasn't ready for this masterpiece' - Jake Kerridge, Telegraph'Lewis is one of the great postwar writers' - Benjamin Myers'GBH is the final masterpiece of one of England's finest, but still most neglected post-war writers' - David Peace

GDR Literature in German Curricula and Textbooks: Exploring the Legacy of GDR Authors, 1985-2015 (Palgrave Studies in Educational Media)

by Elizabeth Priester Steding

This book analyzes the changing portrayal of GDR literature in German Gymnasium textbooks 1985-2015. Addressing the need for textbook research to broaden its focus from GDR history to GDR literature, the author presents case studies of well-known GDR authors (Bertolt Brecht, Johannes R. Becher, Anna Seghers, Wolf Biermann, and Christa Wolf), each examining a particular aspect of the societal discourse about GDR literature and the tension between (literary) text and (historical) context. Taken together, the case studies reveal the frequently underestimated power of ideology in literature textbooks. They also show how attempts to package these authors into simplified categories ultimately reveal the profound complexities of the GDR literary legacy. By examining the clear tension between literature and politics in textbooks and curricula, the author demonstrates how ideological messages are transmitted in all textbooks, as well as the importance of attending to overt and covert ideology.

Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists

by James Geary

Both an expert and a collector, James Geary has devoted his life to aphorisms-and the last few years to organizing, indexing, and even translating them. The result is Geary's Guide, featuring aphorists like Voltaire, Twain, Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali, Emily Dickinson, and Mae West, as well as international practitioners appearing in English for the first time. But it is more than just a conventional anthology. It is also an encyclopedia, containing brief biographies of each author in addition to a selection of his or her aphorisms. The book is a field guide, too, with aphorists organized into eight different "species," such as Comics, Critics & Satirists; Icons & Iconoclasts; and Painters & Poets. The book's two indexes-by author and by subject-make it easily searchable, while its unique organizational structure and Geary's lively biographical entries set it apart from all previous reference works. A perfect follow-up to Geary's New York Times bestseller The World in a Phrase, Geary's Guide is eminently suitable for browsing or for sustained reading. A comprehensive guide to our most intimate, idiosyncratic literary form, the book is an indispensable tool for writers and public speakers as well as essential reading for all language lovers.
