Challenging Topics in Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care

by Zahid Hussain Khan

This book focuses on controversial issues in neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care that in general have been subjected to insufficient professional scrutiny. The book is in three parts, the first of which is devoted to topics relating to traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, such as brain tissue oxygenation, the role of biomarkers, and diagnosis of brain death. Aspects of airway and pain management are then addressed, covering, for example, airway management in an emergency setting, airway evaluation in the edentulous patient, and pain management in neurosurgery and after craniotomy. The final part of the book considers a wide range of other challenging subjects in the field of neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care. Throughout, much information is provided on the latest, state of the art management. The authors are acknowledged experts in the issues they discuss, and the book will be of interest for graduate and undergraduate students, residents, neuroanesthetists, neurointensivists, emergency medicine residents and specialists, fellows in neurocritical care and all those directly involved in the perioperative care of patients with head and neck pathology.

Champions for children, revised edition: The lives of modern child care pioneers

by Bob Holman

Numerous books have been written about Victorian child care pioneers, but few biographical studies have been published about more recent child care and welfare giants. In the revised edition of this classic book, Bob Holman, a champion for children in his own right, looks at the lives of six inspirational individuals who have made significant contributions to the well-being of disadvantaged children. Each of the six discussed - Eleanor Rathbone, Lady Marjory Allen, Clare Winnicott, John Stroud, Barbara Kahan and Peter Townsend - has been important in establishing present systems of child care and welfare, and in stimulating debate around issues which remain high on policy and practitioner agendas. Champions for children is essential reading for childhood and youth studies, sociology of the family, social work, social welfare, academics and students with an interest in child care and welfare issues.

Chance Encounters: A Bioethics for a Damaged Planet

by Kristien Hens

In this rigorous and necessary book, Kristien Hens brings together bioethics and the philosophy of biology to argue that it is ethically necessary for scientific research to include a place for the philosopher. As well as ethical, their role is conceptual: they can improve the quality and coherence of scientific research by ensuring that particular concepts are used consistently and thoughtfully across interdisciplinary projects. Hens argues that chance and uncertainty play a central part in bioethics, but that these qualities can be in tension with the attempt to establish a given theory as scientific knowledge: in describing organisms and practices, in a sense we create the world. Hens contends that this is necessarily an ethical activity. Examining genetic research, biomedical ethics, autism research and the concept of risk, Hens illustrates that there is no ‘universal’ or ‘neutral’ state of scientific and clinical knowledge, and that attending to the situatedness of individual experience is essential to understand the world around us, to know its (and our) limitations, and to forge an ethical future. Chance Encounters is aimed at a broad audience of researchers in bioethics, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, as well as biomedical and environmental scientists. It will also be relevant to policymakers, and the artwork by Christina Stadlbauer and Bartaku will be of interest to artists and writers working at the intersection of art and science.

Change, Challenge and School Nursing (PDF)

by Anita Franklin Nicola Madge

Change, Challenge and School Nursing looks at both the health needs of young people and good practice in school nursing. Based on a survey of almost three thousand pupils, it examines young people's views on their own health, their support needs, where they turn to for advice, and their contacts with school nurses. Interviews with school nursing professionals, provide a 'snapshot' of school nursing services in transition from a medical model to a public health role, outlining provision, priorities and how young people's health needs are being addressed. The challenges in providing an effective service for all young people are highlighted and taking the views and experiences of young users into account will help to meet some of these. The lessons from this research are broadly applicable across the service.

Change Point Analysis for Time Series (Springer Series in Statistics)

by Lajos Horváth Gregory Rice

This volume provides a comprehensive survey that covers various modern methods used for detecting and estimating change points in time series and their models. The book primarily focuses on asymptotic theory and practical applications of change point analysis. The methods discussed in the book go beyond the traditional change point methods for univariate and multivariate series. It also explores techniques for handling heteroscedastic series, high-dimensional series, and functional data. While the primary emphasis is on retrospective change point analysis, the book also presents sequential "on-line" methods for detecting change points in real-time scenarios. Each chapter in the book includes multiple data examples that illustrate the practical application of the developed results. These examples cover diverse fields such as economics, finance, environmental studies, and health data analysis. To reinforce the understanding of the material, each chapter concludes with several exercises.Additionally, the book provides a discussion of background literature, allowing readers to explore further resources for in-depth knowledge on specific topics. Overall, "Change Point Analysis for Time Series" offers a broad and informative overview of modern methods in change point analysis, making it a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and students interested in analyzing and modeling time series data.

Change-Promoting Research for Health Services (UK Higher Education OUP Humanities & Social Sciences Health & Social Welfare)

by A St Leger J Walsworth-Bell

Health services globally are changing, strategically, structurally and clinically. Research and Development (R&D) plays a key role, because only good research can elucidate and challenge the status quo or future possibilities for effective health care.Researchers and managers have a duty to collaborate with clinicians, to understand and make the most of each others' skills. This necessitates a new paradigm of health service research which is part of a change management culture and change promotion. A clear philosophical and practical distinction is required between R&D and fundamental biomedical science. This book has been written for people who make decisions and bring about change, at all sorts of levels, and in a wide range of disciplines. They include clinicians in many specialities, as well as administrative staff, and general managers of healthcare organizations. It is also for people doing, or wanting to do, research and development in this fascinating area.

Changes in Sensory Motor Behavior in Aging (ISSN #Volume 114)

by A. M Ferrandez N. Teasdale

Recently, studies on aging processes and age-related changes in behavior have been expanding considerably, probably due to the dramatic changes observed in the demographics. This increase in the overall age and proportion of elderly people has heightened the severity of problems associated with the safety and well-being of elderly persons in everyday life. Many researchers working on motor control have thus focused more intensely on the effects of age on motor control. This new avenue of research has led to programs for alleviating or delaying the specific sensory-motor limitations encountered by the elderly (e.g. falls) in an attempt to make the elderly more autonomous. The aggregation of studies from different perspectives is often fascinating, especially when the same field can serve as a common ground between researchers. Nearly all contributors to this book work on sensory-motor aging; they represent a large range of affiliations and backgrounds including psychology, neurobiology, cognitive sciences, kinesiology, neuropsychology, neuropharmacology, motor performance, physical therapy, exercise science, and human development. Addressing age-related behavioral changes can also furnish some crucial reflections in the debate about motor coordination: aging is the product of both maturational and environmental processes, and studies on aging must determine how the intricate interrelationships between these processes evolve. The study of aging makes it possible to determine how compensatory mechanisms, operating on different subsystems and each aging at its own rate, compensate for biological degenerations and changing external demands. This volume will contribute to demonstrating that the study of the aging process raises important theoretical questions.
