Changing Substance Abuse and Criminal Behavior Through Therapeutic Relationships

This book approaches the treatment process from a new and yet old perspective. Eleven men who successfully desisted from substance abuse and offending were interviewed to determine how their significant therapeutic relationships facilitated this life change. Data is integrated with a new psychodynamic framework, relational analytic theory, which focuses clinical attention on the qualities and processes of the therapeutic relationship. A therapy model is developed which addresses how to attain and maintain therapeutic engagement, treat client symptoms, and utilize therapeutic conflict to develop client capacity for internal conflict and personal agency, functions critical to resolving addictive behavior. Changing Things — Moving People: Strategies for Promoting Sustainable Development at the Local Level

This book results from a pioneering effort to organize a productive interdisciplinary research program on sustainable development policy in a small country not previously recognized as a world leader in environmental social science. The results are very promising, considering the short time frame and the high barriers to success for such an enterprise - differences in concepts and terminology, disciplinary myopia, and the inherent difficulty of the problem. In the USA, where I work, these barriers continue to pose major challenges after some 30 years of effort. Switzerland has made noteworthy progress in only five. The Swiss group has succeeded in developing a unifying framework that makes a major contri­ bution to environmental policy analysis. The framework broadens policy thinking by giving se­ rious treatment to underutilized strategies that rely on communication and informal influence as well as to well-studied ones that rely on technological change, regulation, and economic forces. This broad typology makes it easier for an analyst to escape the tendency to presume that the po­ licy instrument currently in fashion, whether it be market-based instruments, voluntary measures, or whatever, is the right strategy for all problems. It also encourages discipline-based analysts to consider how their favored strategies might be combined with other strategies less familiar to them, and thus to craft strategies that can take advantage of the strengths of various policy instruments.

The Changing Visual System: Maturation and Aging in the Central Nervous System (Nato Science Series A: #222)

In late May and early June 1991, a NATO Advanced Study Institute was held at a hotel in the hilltop village of San Martino al Cimino a few kilometers from the city of Viterbo in the Lazio region of Italy. The title of the course was the same as this volume and brought together specialists working at all phases of the life span (embryology, infancy, childhood, middle life and senescence) in both animals and humans to exchange ideas, facts and theories in the search for common principles. Such principles could prove important for understanding developmental changes in the central nervous system and visual behavior within the context of a continuum of life-span processes rather than viewing them as events or mechanisms that occur only in a certain period. For example, changes that are associated with "aging" were considered as extensions or continuations of processes that began at an earlier stage of the life span, rather than being seen as processes that only began late in life.

The analysis of deterministic chaos is currently an active field in many branches of research. Mathematically all nonlinear dynamical systems with more than two degrees of freedom can generate chaos, becoming unpredictable over a longer time scale. The brain is a nonlinear system par excellence. Accordingly, the concepts of chaotic dynamics have found, in the last five years, an important application in research on compound electrical activity of the brain. The present volume seeks to cover most of the relevant studies in the newly emerging field of chaotic attractors in the brain. This volume is essentially a selection and reorganization of contri­ butions from the first two volumes in the Springer Series in Brain Dynamics, which were based on conferences held in 1985 and 1987 in Berlin. It also includes (a) a survey of progress in the recording of evoked oscillations of the brain both at the cellular and EEG levels and (b) an agenda for research on chaotic dynamics. Although the first publications pointing out evidence of chaotic behavior of the EEG did not appear until the beginning of 1985, the presence of the pioneering scientists in this field gave the participants at the first conference (volume 1) a strong impulse toward this field. For me, as conference organizer, having been for a long time active in nonlinear EEG research, the integration of this topic was self-evident; however, the enthusiasm of the conference participants was greater than expected.
